Cattle Rustlers Corralled in East Texas

A pair of cattle rustlers was apprehended on August 31, in Corsicana, TX, by the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office. The thieves were stealing Angus cattle from their employer, Charles Cline. After Cline contacted the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, the pair was apprehended shortly thereafter. Livestock theft is a third degree felony and the pair is charged with stealing approximately $100,000 worth of cattle. Read the full story here.

Beef Exports Gradually Increasing

According to the Livestock Marketing Information Center, beef exports are increasing slowly since the first discovery of BSE in the United States in 2004. Exports are expected to increase by 6.2 percent in 2007 and 7.6 percent in 2008. The export outlook chart is available at the Livestock Marketing Information Center at www.lmic.info.

Weekly Hay Report from Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Trade activity light to moderate. Demand continues to be very good on all classes of hay. Prices remain steady to firm. Spotty rain showers were reported throughout the coverage area. Pastures beginning to progress forward as forage production has increased due to spotty showers. Hay inventories remain as low as producers are able to move hay straight from the field. Armyworms were spotted in the Eastern areas but sightings were limited. The state of Texas Department of Agriculture has a Hay and Grazing Hot Line set up for buyers and Sellers, number is 1-877-429-1998. The web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. Prices for hay and pellets quoted per ton except where noted.

PROPOSED HEALTHY FORESTS PARTNERSHIP ACT DISCUSSED BY OFFICIALS

DENVER, Sept. 5, 2006 – United States Department of Agriculture, Interior and Forestry Officials met in Denver on September 5, 2006 for an aerial tour of beetle-invested areas of Grand and Summit counties in Colorado. During their visit, they discussed proposed legislation, which will afford both the Secretaries of Agriculture and the Interior opportunities to accomplish work on federal lands through partnerships with state, tribal and local governments. HISTORIC ROOSEVELT RANCH ACQUIRED BY FOREST SERVICE

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30, 2006 - Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns announced the USDA Forest Service and the Eberts family reached an agreement for the agency to acquire the historically significant 52 hundred acre Elkhorn Ranch located in the Badlands of western North Dakota. Theodore Roosevelt, the nation's 26th president, operated a large ranching operation for many miles along the Little Missouri River from his Elkhorn cabin site in the 1880s. The ranch lands will become part of the Little Missouri National Grasslands. Read the full story here.

JOHANNS ANNOUNCES OVER $4.6 MILLION IN GRANTS FOR TRIBAL COLLEGES

Colleges In Eight States To Receive Funds, Seven Montana Colleges To Share $2.1 Million

WASHINGTON, August 30, 2006-Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns announced that $4,690,161 in grant funds will be provided to 16 tribal colleges in eight states. The funds are being provided through the USDA Rural Development Tribal College Initiative Grant program. Read the full story here.
