TLBAA Members Donate Steers to Fort Worth Longhorn Herd

TLBAA members T.M. and Jean Smith of Boyd, TX, and Larry and Gala Johnston of Lookeba, OK, have graciously donated steers to the Fort Worth Longhorn Herd. Larry and Gala Johnston have previously donated a steer to the herd. The two older steers have already joined the herd and are a part of the daily cattle drive through the Stockyards. The younger steer from Johnston is currently being acquainted with the herd and will be added to the daily cattle drive soon.

Public Education Specialist for the Fort Worth Herd, Emily Martin was happy to share the news. “It’s very important to us to recognize our donors,” Martin said. “They’ve been so generous to us.”

Lucky, registered as Pixie’s Lucky Amigo, is a dark red and white steer with a red head. Donated by Larry and Gala Johnston, owners of Johnston Longhorns located in Lookeba, OK, Lucky was sired by Amigo Chex and calved on June 2, 2001.

TMS Sheriff, known around the Stockyards as Sheriff Smitty, is light red with a white patch on his forehead. From the Bar S Ranch in Boyd, Texas, Sheriff Smitty was donated by T. M. and Jean Smith. He was sired by Whelming Image and calved on April 15, 2002.

With several seasoned steers and experienced Drovers to help guide them, these two steers are quickly becoming accustomed to the twice-daily trek through the Stockyards. In addition, the Fort Worth Herd is pleased to announce the arrival of J. L. Duramax. A blue roan with black legs, Duramax was also donated by Johnston Longhorns. Sired by Amigo Chex and calved on February 25, 2005 he is already showing great promise as a star of the Herd.

With so many milestones to celebrate, the Fort Worth Herd is looking forward to a great year. As Lucky and Sheriff Smitty add some young blood to the daily cattle drives and all three steers join the Herd in educational programs, it is sure to be a year worth remembering. The cattle drive can be seen twice daily at 11:30 and 4:00 along East Exchange Avenue in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Here are some photos of the newest members of the Fort Worth Herd in action.

Tickets are now on sale for the Michael Martin Murphey “End of the Trail” open-air concert, to be held Saturday September 30 at 7pm in Ellsworth. The concert is part of the Great American Cattle Drive, a celebration of Ellsworth’s history as an end-of the-trail railhead “cow town”.

The Great American Cattle Drive is a benefit for the National Drover’s Hall of Fame and the Kansas Cattle Towns Coalition, a non-profit group working to raise money to create a National Drover’s Hall of Fame museum in Ellsworth, KS.

TLBAA Member Red McCombs Quoted in Story about NFL Football Team Plans for San Antonio

TLBAA member, and former owner of the Minnesota Vikings, Red McCombs, San Antonio, TX, was recently quoted in a story focusing on efforts to bring a National Football League franchise to San Antonio. With the Alamodome as a temporary home for the New Orleans Saints just after hurricane Katrina last fall, the buzz around town favors bringing a professional football team to San Antonio.

All three Saints games played in San Antonio were sell-outs and football fever still grips the city. City officials have stated that San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the U.S. but only ranks 29th in the television market. With McCombs history as a team owner and a media heavyweight, the future might hold NFL games for the “Fiesta City”.
