Another great sale, at the best little sale barn in Texas, went into the books on Saturday, October 7, 2006. TLBAA member from across the area came out to enjoy each other’s company and to buy and sell Texas Longhorns. TLBAA Chairman Joel Lemley personally thanked the attendees and the membership for supporting all the Best at West Sales. Auctioneer Brian Uptmore took the microphone and the sale was started at 11 am.

With over 170 lots on the auction block at this Best of West, the sale was surprisingly brisk. Like every Best at West there were a lot of great looking Texas Longhorns up for grabs. Lemley took over the microphone to lead the auctioneering at one point. If you weren’t there, you missed out on a fun day in West, TX. Be sure to make plans to attend the next one on December 2, 2006.

Bevo XIII Dies

On Tuesday, October 10, 2006, Bevo XIII died at the age of 22 years old. He had served 16 seasons as the University of Texas’s beloved mascot. Registered with the TLBAA as “Sunrise Express”, he was the 1984 son of Blue Excitement and Miss Tex Ann. Former Chairman of the TLBAA, John T. Baker, Liberty Hill, TX, donated Bevo to UT in 1988. Before he was UT’s mascot he was a World Grand Champion Steer at 3 years old. He wasn’t just a mascot for Longhorn fans he was an ambassador for the Longhorn world and was present at the 2000 and 2004 inaugurations of President George W. Bush.

Bevo XIII was the UT mascot for 16 seasons before he retired and Bevo XIV, pictured in the background, became the new UT mascot.

According to reports on TexasSports.com, Bevo XIII will be memorialized on Friday, November 3, 2006, at the Silver Spurs Bevo Center. The center is a repository of pictures and stories of each of the previous Bevos that served as the University of Texas’ mascot.

Drought Conditions Update

Dry conditions have gripped much of the Southwest; lack of rain has become real news for the Texas Longhorn industry. Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Trade remains active and demand good, with firm undertone noted. Hay is still hard to find, especially alfalfa hay. All the hay is committed to buyers and is selling fast. Other types of hay are becoming more readily available to accommodate needs. Some areas, previously in drought situations, have experienced more favorable weather conditions and milder temperatures. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hot Line set up for buyers and Sellers, number is 1-877-429-1998. The web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.

Beef Checkoff Program Turns 20

Twenty years and counting, the Beef Checkoff Program has reached a substantial milestone since its inception in 1986. Originally $1-per-head of all cattle sold went toward a nationwide effort to increase demand for beef. Slogans, which had become cultural memes, such as the “Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner.” campaign have been the most memorable for consumers and has been widely accepted within the industry. Read the full story at www.beefboard.org.
