Famous Steer Mount Loaned to TLBAA Office

The full mounted head of Grand Champion Steer John C. Fremont proudly hangs above TLBAA President Don L. King’s desk.

Col. Fraser and Teddy West of Westhaven Longhorn Ranch in Ione, CA, loaned John C. Fremont in late September 2006. John C. Fremont was named after the famous western scout and second governor of California, Captain John C. Fremont. His horns measure 84 inches tip-to-tip and he tipped the scales at 1950 pounds.

The TLBAA is very thankful to have such a prestigious steer mount on loan to the TLBAA offices.

Drought Conditions Update

Dry conditions have gripped much of the Southwest; lack of rain has become real news for the Texas Longhorn industry. Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Trade and demand is moderate, with firm undertone noted. Hay production is slowing down with the cold front coming into Texas. Some areas have received rain, but with the drought conditions over the summer and early fall, too little too late. Different types of hay are still being offered, while alfalfa hay is hard to find. There is little surplus and movement has slowed. Some areas are experiencing problems with weeds, grasshoppers and armyworms. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has a Hay and Grazing Hot Line set up for buyers and sellers, number is 1-877-429-1998. The web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
