Texas Christian University to Grant 1st Ranch Management Degree in December

Texas Christian University has recently announced that Paxton Motheral will be awarded the first Ranch Management Bachelors degree for the university’s ranch management program. Motheral first enrolled at TCU as a finance major and had planned to receive only a certificate from the ranch program. Motheral’s family has a background in ranching. The TCU ranch management program has been educating future ranch managers for over 50 years and Motheral’s degree will be the first bachelor’s degree awarded. In addition to in-class courses students in the program also take five-week long trips during the semesters to various ranches all over Texas. Read the full story on TCU’s Daily Skiff Web site.

North Dakota State University Scientists Working on Easier Animal Identification Tags

Much of the debate over National Animal Identification System (NAIS) has centered around the difficultly of tracking cattle once entered in the system. Scientists at North Dakota State University are currently working on developing an ear tag that will satisfy the NAIS as well as relieve the cumbersome process for ranchers and breeders. The scientists hope to utilize the radio frequency identification tags (RFID) to miniaturize the ear tags in order to make them less cumbersome to the animals. Read more on the AgWeek Web site here.

Russia Removes U.S. Meat Trade Obstacles

Russia has struck a trade agreement with the U.S. to open up meat imports after 12 years of negotiation. The agreement will help Russia get closer to membership within the World Trade Organization. Part of the agreement says that Russia must cut tariffs on many agricultural and manufactured goods to average around 8 percent. More information can be found on FarmFutures.com.
