January Beef Cattle Management Tips From the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture
By W. Warren Gill, Professor, Animal Science
Winter is here and the cold weather can make cattle management a challenge. Hay and supplements are usually the most expensive item in the cattle producer's budget. Good supplementation may be more critical than usual in 2005 because test results indicate that much of the hay cut in 2004 may be inferior in quality. Discuss medicine and equipment needs with your veterinarian and/or county Extension agent. Carefully observe heifers and cows for signs of labor. Know when to assist and when to call the veterinarian. Calves should be kept in as clean an area as possible. Scours and pneumonia can result if conditions become too unsanitary. Purebred producers should plan to take birth weights on all calves. Watch the water as ponds may freeze during cold weather. This can decrease performance and even be dangerous if cattle walk out on ice in search of water. If electric water heaters are used in automatic watering devices, make certain there is no stray voltage to decrease or prevent water consumption. Minimize Disease By Spreading Cattle Out During Winter Months
Dense animal populations will often aid the spread of disease infestation; reduce exposure to your herd by spreading out your herd this winter and keeping your spring cattle crop healthy. Read more on American Cowman.com.
Drought Relief Funds Might Not Reach Farmers or Ranchers Until 2007
At the recent annual convention of the Texas Farm Bureau in Arlington, TX, on December 4, 2006, attendees were given some dry news – drought relief payments from the federal government shouldn’t be expected until early 2007.
U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, said it would be an “uphill fight” to get the payments done before the New Year. Read more on MyCattle.com.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Trade and demand remain moderate. Supply remains short, and some are stretching the hay that they have left as far as it can go. Although there has been some moisture lately, the drought conditions continue to be a problem for winter crops growing in some areas. The weather varies in different areas, but most areas have experienced their first hard freezes of the season, drying out soils and killing warm season crops. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
