DNA Analysis May Be Used to Breed Better Beef

The analysis of gene traits in beef cattle may lead to a longer stride in breeding in the coming years, according to an article posted on STLtoday.com. In the past, breeders relied on visual observations and animal characteristics to make breeding choices. DNA studies point to a potential commercial use of genetic data in order to take some of the guess work out of the breeding process. The analysis of the animal’s genetic traits would allow a breeder the chance to see hidden potentials in their breeding stock and possibly make larger gains for their operations. Meat Safe, Producers Say Animal ID Not Needed

The recent announcement by the United States Department of Agriculture to make the hotly debated National Animal Identification System voluntary has been met with a sigh of relief from cattle producers, but others have noticed that an industry implemented and regulated tracking system might be the future for meat producers, as assuring the safety of food to the consumer is a primary concern for the beef industry.
