Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: The hay market remains steady with extremely light activity, which is a typical holiday week scenario. Hay supplies are very short in most areas of the state due to drought conditions the past two years. Many producers had been forced to start feeding hay early in the fall and there was virtually no carry over from last year. Recent rains and snow have brought hope to livestock producers as they watch rye, oat, or wheat pastures green up. We realize that winter temperatures limit the amount of current growth potential, but at least there is some hope for early spring grazing, which is desperately needed as hay stocks dwindle. If the early spring grazing does not materialize we will undoubtedly be forced with larger cowherd liquidations. Price ranges for alfalfa hay continue to widen due to differences in quality. Some producers have been surprised and have found considerable damage due to the recent moisture in outside stored hay stocks, particularly in uncovered large bales. They have found that they stored hay in hopes of higher winter prices only to find a lower market due to the loss of quality. Some feedlots have turned to cotton burrs and other sources of roughage to cheapen rations. Burrs can have 8-9 percent protein however they also have a higher level of lignin than hay, which has limited digestibility.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
