The big show is almost here! The upcoming Fort Worth Stock Show is packed with Texas Longhorn events fo r all TLBAA members to enjoy. Here is some updated information about the stock show.

The Select Heifer Sale will be on Saturday, January 13, 2007, at 5 pm. Notice to Select Heifer Consignors: Per the Fort Worth Stock Show, no cattle will be allowed on the Fort Worth Stock grounds before Friday morning on January 12, 2007. If cattle arrive before Friday morning the Fort Worth Stockyards has pens available for members to overnight their Longhorns. Notice to Buyers: Please enter at Gate 6 and inform attendant you are going to the Texas Longhorn Sale.

Texas Longhorn Show Information: On Tuesday, January 16, 2007, the Open/Haltered Texas Longhorn Show will commence at 5 pm and will be judged by Dr. Lorna Pelton. On Wednesday, January 17, 2007, the Autobahn Motorcar Group Youth Scholarship Tour kicks off the New Year with $50,000 in scholarship money at the Youth Show beginning at 9 am and will be judged by Jerry McPeak. The Autobahn Motorcar Group Youth Scholarship Tour has 327 total entries in the Youth Show and 534 total entries in both Longhorn shows for the upcoming Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. Sponsors John and Diann Chase, Fort Worth, TX, have graciously donated the Autobahn Motorcar Group Youth Scholarship Tour scholarship money. Our continued thanks to the Chases for their outstanding generosity and strong support of the TLBT Youth.

TLBAA General Membership Meeting and Awards Banquet Information: On Friday January 12, 2007, the TLBAA will hold the 42nd Annual General Membership Meeting in Fort Worth, TX, at 11 am at the Radisson Fort Worth North. There is a special room rate of $79 per night available for TLBAA members. Please contact the Radisson Fort Worth North at (817) 625-9911 for details and to make reservations.

At the Annual General Membership Meeting, the announcement of Division A Directors elections and general business will be conducted. All active TLBAA members are invited and encouraged to attend the Annual General Membership Meeting.

Dried Distiller’s Grains Can Help Produce More Beef

AMARILLO – Supplemental feeding of dried distiller's grains to cattle can help produce more beef in grazing programs, a Texas Agricultural Experiment Station researcher said.

After a summer and fall feeding study done with both heifers and steers, Dr. Jim MacDonald, Experiment Station beef nutritionist, said he believes this by-product of ethanol production will be useful in more than just feedlot or dairy operations.

In the next few years, an additional 200 to 600 million gallons of ethanol are expected to be produced in the High Plains, MacDonald said. Production will utilize up to 214 million bushels of corn or sorghum and result in 1.71 million tons of distiller's grains.

"A majority will likely be utilized by feedyards and dairies, but due to the sheer increase in availability, there should be opportunities for cow/calf and stocker operations to use it as well," he said. Read more of this story on AgNews.

Job Description of the Executive Director

Note: Job Description is subject to the TLBAA Board of Directors approval at the board meeting on January 12, 2006.

The TLBAA, headquartered in Ft. Worth, Texas, exists to protect the unique heritage and purity of the Texas Longhorn breed of cattle. The business and affairs of the association is managed by its Board of Directors. An Exec. Director may be employed by the Chairman of the Board with the approval of the Board of Directors. The Exec. Director shall, by executing the policies established by the Board of Directors, carry forward the mission of the TLBAA by: a) maintaining the cattle registry; b) promoting outside interest in the breed through aggressive public relations; c) providing cohesive leadership for the widely dispersed regional affiliates and other aligned groups; d) continuously striving toward enhancement of the marketplace for the benefit of all its individual members and the solvency of the TLBAA; e) engendering, at all levels, a true spirit of accommodation toward the membership; f) providing stable and creative leadership couched in integrity and fair play.

Summary of Major Duties:

1.Responsible for the overall operation of the association and its facilities.

2.Responsible for implementing a sound fiscal management policy. Maintaining financial solvency of the association and developing revenue enhancement projects.
3.Within the restraints of the budget, hire fire and supervise such administrative staff and personnel as may be required.
4.Prepare an annual budget for Board discussion and approval and provide, at a minimum, annual financial reports as directed by the by-laws.
5.Keep or cause to be kept exact minutes of the meetings of the Board of Directors.
6.Shall receive and verify entries of insertion in the Herd Registry, subject to the Rules and Regulations of the TLBAA and shall keep on file all documents constituting the authority for pedigrees.
7.Shall keep a record of all transfers of animals and, by all means, protect the integrity of the Herd Registry.
8.Responsible for the publication of the official monthly magazine, TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS, and maintenance of the TLBAA website.
9.Oversee the Board of Directors election process as set forth in the by-laws.
10.Continually strive toward expansion of the membership base.
11.Shall perform all other duties properly ordered by the Chairman of the Board or the Board of Directors and formulate operating policies and procedures to implement these directives.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Most areas in Texas have received some type of moisture, and there looks to be more rain headed for the Panhandle by the weekend. The rain received has helped winter pasture conditions. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate prediction Center is forecasting above normal precipitation for most of Texas through February. Prices for good hay are stronger. Good grass hay in the Panhandle is almost nonexistent, and small squares of alfalfa are extremely hard to find in the West. Some areas have experienced problems with gophers. The hay market remains steady, although supplies are tight, demand good and activity remains light. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us.
