Keep Your Longhorns Safe: Watch Out For Narrow Feeder Bars
TLBAA member Jim Bothwell, Tyler, TX, sent these photos into the Trails warning other Longhorn breeders to modify or not even use elevated feeders for their Longhorns, due to Longhorns potentially getting their horns stuck between the bars.

“That cow is due any day now and I could have lost the baby and/or the mama both. I would have NEVER dreamed that a cow could get stuck in bars that closely spaced,” Bothwell said in an email. “I have since gone back to the more traditional hay ‘Rings’ that sit on the ground until all of my Elevated racks have been suitably modified.”

Editor’s Note: Thanks to Jim Bothwell, Tyler, TX, for sending this into the E-Trails.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Last weekends storm has caused trucks to stop running in Texas altogether as many areas in the state are frozen over. This is causing the supply to become shorter. The small squares are almost non-existent, and there seems to be more chopped hay on the market in the Panhandle. In the South, growers are starting to prepare for spring planting and recent rains will help range conditions. Range and pasture conditions ranging from poor to fair, and soil moisture conditions ranging from short to adequate. Demand remains good, while the activity and movement remains light. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
