TLBAA Member Being Deployed to Iraq, Looking to Sell Longhorn Herd
TLBAA Member Jamie Kaspar, Wichita Falls, TX , just received orders to deploy to Iraq to serve in the U.S. Army. Kaspar, a TLBAA member since June 2005, has been trained to use the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), and says since his position is a combat position he thinks he will be protecting convoys during his deployment – one of the most dangerous tasks in Iraq.
“I’m going over to the beach with no water,” Kaspar said. “I just don’t want to burden my parents or my friends anymore, because I’ve been already been on active duty for the past seven or eight months.”
Kaspar will deploy for Iraq very soon and won’t have a chance to sell his Longhorns at the next TLBAA membership sale in Marshall, VA.
Kaspar is looking to find a good home for one herd sire – Specht Buckshot Ranger – and all seven of his Longhorns. He said, during a phone interview, all of his Longhorns are registered except for two bull calves born this year. He said he wanted them to go to a TLBAA member because he doesn’t want the animals to be slaughtered. “At least I’d know they would go somewhere that they could be used,” Kaspar said.
Kaspar’s herd includes:
- Two bulls, one of which is his herd sire
- One foundation cow – Unique Hope
- One Two-year-old heifer
- Two One-year-old heifers
- Two unregistered yearling bull calves
Kaspar said that all of his heifers have not yet dropped calves. Interested persons can contact Kaspar at (940) 613-3664 or email him at KoffeePotRanch@yahoo.com or JRKHunter1@yahoo.com.

TLBAA Member’s Son Pitching for the New York Yankees
Ross Ohlendorf, son of TLBAA member Curtis Ohlendorf, might soon be wearing pin stripes on the pitchers’ mound for the New York Yankees in an upcoming Major League Baseball season. The 24-year-old right-hander has worked his way up through the minor leagues – see E-Trails #90 – to now have a locker next to Yankees’ pitcher Mike Mussina, at least for spring training in Tampa, FL. Ohlendorf will most likely play the 2007 season with the Yankees’ Triple-A farm team the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. He was acquired in a four-for-one deal that sent All-Star pitcher Randy Johnston to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Read an article about Ross on the Austin American Statesman Web site here.Good luck this season, Ross!
Longhorn Fever Caught in the February New Mexico Stockman
Many TLBAA members were featured in a story published about New Mexico Longhorn breeders in the February issue of the New Mexico Stockman. Among the members was a “who’s-who” list of the Texas Longhorn Breeders of New Mexico (TLBNM), a TLBAA affiliate.
The article focused on the niche market of Texas Longhorns in New Mexico and on how the breeders use their cattle to improve the breed and to supplement other cow-calf operations with Longhorn traits. Congratulations to the TLBNM for being such a strong affiliate of the TLBAA!

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Demand and trade moderate. Supply remains short, and prices continue to be steady. Supplemental feeding continues. Over the last week, movement has slowed down some. Supreme, or dairy quality alfalfa is extremely hard to find. Small squares are almost non-existent; in fact some are slicing large bales and rebailing into two-banded small bales to try to provide those who need them. Very little new crop chopped hay is being traded. In the North Central and Eastern areas spring field preparation has begun as some growers are beginning to fertilize. Some growers are getting ready to plant Bermuda grasses. Many areas have experienced severe windy conditions over the last week, with winds blowing up to 70 mph. With all of the wind, there has been some concern about the soil erosion and depleting soil moisture. The temperatures have gotten warmer over the week helping winter crop growth, with wheat conditions ranging from fair to excellent. Soil moisture is adequate. Rangeland and pasture conditions are ranging from poor to fair. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
