Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Prices remain steady, except for chopped hay, which has softened a little in the last week. Demand and trade are moderate. Supply is tight with some growers either completely out or not much hay left. In the South some parts experienced a freeze. Small square bales have more or less disappeared, and what is left is lesser quality. Some continue to slice and re-bale large bales. Growers are continuing to fertilize in many areas and starting to irrigate out West. This year the price of fertilizer has increased about 60-75 percent. The weather has been drying up which has led to concerns of drought and fire danger for this spring and summer and has also caused stress on land and winter grasses. Some have been waiting for it to rain first before starting to plant. Supplemental feeding continues. Soil moisture is rated short to adequate and pasture and rangeland conditions range from fair to poor. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
