Steer On The Run!

North Richland Hills, TX, police had to un-holster their lassos on Thursday, March 8, 2007, to apprehend an unruly suspect who had been running amok through the streets for nearly two hours. A crossbred steer got loose from an undetermined pasture in the area and wandered through city streets and through a McDonalds drive thru before being tranquilized and corralled over two hours later. Harsh Winter Has U.S. Cattle Prices Heading North

Last week, in the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, cattle prices reached a three-year high with signs of beef supplies being tight for the summer from the harsh winter and high feed prices still gripping many beef producers. The up-tick in beef prices has some analysts citing increased demand and a slow down of production as the main cause. Read more on the Toronto Star Web site.

Watch for Parasites in Spring Pastures

With warmer weather just around the corner, cattle producers now have to contend with the potential for pasture parasites curbing the growth of their spring crop of calves. Watching out for common pasture parasites can help improve cattle growth and protect a rancher’s investment. Cattle that graze in a parasite infected pasture will inevitably consume the parasites and re-infect the pasture throughout the grazing season. According to a list of the top producing agriculture commodities, Texas cattle operations contribute $7.6 billion annually to the economy of Texas.
