Former TLBAA Board Member Welcomes International Guests At Ranch

By Cole Dowden
How do you say Texas Longhorn in Swedish? Tex-as Long-horn. Nothing was lost in translation on Friday, April 13, 2007, at Cliff and Anita Whitfill’s ranch in Covington, TX, as they welcomed 14 Swedish pet food vendors to their ranch to visit their Texas Longhorns. Don’t worry these vendors weren’t looking for the next secret ingredient for their product; they were just there to see and snap photos of these majestic animals up close.
Lupus Foder, AB, a pet food company in Sweden, rewarded top sellers of its premium dog food products with a trip across Texas. Company spokesman and trip leader Jan Crister Andersson, “The Sweedish Cowboy” from, Vasteras, SWE, said that the trip was a yearly excursion for the company and he enjoyed having the chance to see some real-life Texas Longhorns up close. Andersson even got one Longhorn to take a feed cube from his hand (see photo below).

Many of the visitors were long time pet food vendors for Lupus Foder, AB, and some had been in the business for 12-13 years. Whitfill was concerned that the windy and drizzling conditions would make the animals leery of visitors, but Inge Larsson, Vasteras, SWE, said, “We’re from Sweden. This weather is nothing.”
Everyone enjoyed the chance to snap photos and marvel at the striking color variations found in the Whitfills’ Longhorn herd. Once or twice visitors remarked, “With those horns are they dangerous?” Whitfill was quick to say that Longhorns are very docile and gentle animals and, “They only look dangerous.”

Former TLBAA Board Member Cliff Whitfill (center with Cowboy hat) informed the visitors about the various characteristics of Longhorns and how they evolved in a distinct and magnificent breed.

After being introduced to the Whitfill’s Longhorn herd, the visitors moved out of the wind and rain for refreshments including coffee, orange juice, sausage rolls and doughnuts. Recent copies of the Trails magazine and information packets about the TLBAA were available for the visitors to take home. Everyone enjoyed looking at the magazine and looked forward to reading more about Longhorns, during the rest of their trip through Texas.

Drought Conditions Update

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Trade and demand moderate, with movement slow. Prices are steady and supply remains short. Many areas in Texas received moisture and or freezes this past week and weekend and many areas are expecting more cold temperatures with chances of more freezes, snow, ice and rain. The Panhandle experienced freezing temperatures along with rain and snow, which caused some alfalfa and wheat crops to be damaged and pushed first cuttings back two to three weeks. Some are having to swath their damaged crops and start over. Some wheat is being cut for hay, and in some wheat fields mosaic virus has been detected. In the West, some areas experienced the same problems with freezes, snow and damaged crops, with some losing their crops entirely and are forced to replant. Parts of the North, Central and Eastern areas received rain, snow, sleet and ice. Not many areas reported crop damage. Some are spraying for armyworms. First cuttings are beginning to take place. There have been reports of mildew and rust in wheat, while others are cutting for wheat hay. The recent rains have helped improve pastures green up. In the South cold temperatures earlier in the week had slowed growth a little, but most areas are beginning to warm up and combined with the recent rains crops are looking very green and lush. Some areas are continuing to cut and others will begin cutting in the next week or two. Soil moisture has been rated short to surplus. Wheat conditions are poor to excellent. Rangeland and pasture conditions have been rated as fair to good. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
