TLBAA Members Donate 2007 World Show Gold Merit Calves. We Need Two More!
TLBAA members have always been generous and every year they open their hearts and herds to the Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow (TLBT) youth, who win the Hall of Fame and Gold Merit competitions at the World Show Expo. We would like to thank and recognize these generous TLBAA Members for donating calves for this year’s winners: Rex Mosser, Midway, TX; Leroy and Mary Beth Dunsworth, Peyton, CO; Melvin and Alice French, Granger, TX; Gary Bowdoin, Crawford, TX; and TLBAA Affiliates the North Texas Longhorn Breeders Association and Heart of Texas Association.
Right now, the tally of donated calves sits at six, out of the needed eight. Each first place winner of the TLBT Hall of Fame divisions and Gold Merit competition will receive one of the calves. The TLBT members work hard at these competitions, striving to win their own animal. If you donate a heifer, rest assured that they will be well taken care of and loved.
These calves are often the starting point for TLBT members to begin their own herds and continue the heritage of the Texas Longhorn breed. In the past, the youth also show the animals in future TLBAA World Qualifying Shows.
In addition to supporting the youth, publicity also goes along with having a young person showcase your animal and your breeding program.
If you would like to give an outstanding youth a jumpstart on their own breeding program by donating calves, please contact TLBAA Events Coordinator Pam Dodson at (817) 625-6241 or pam@tlbaa.org.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Trade and demand are moderate on hay with prices holding steady. Rain over most of the state has hay fields and pastures in good to excellent conditions. Supplemental feeding is minimal and not much competition from cow/calf operators for hay at present. Cool days and nights have continued to move cutting and bailing back a week or two in some areas of the state. Several hay producers reluctant to lay down hay this week in some areas in fear of the high percent chances of rain forecast. Much of the trade activity and discussion this week has been centered on pricing new-crop with buyers trying to bid lower as sellers asking old-crop or higher prices. Many large users of hay continue to receive previously contracted supplies while negotiating new-crop prices. Some wheat producers that had freeze damage on wheat the last several weeks will bale for hay instead of wheat harvesting and many to plant corn right behind the wheat. This will put more hay in the marketing channels.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
