TLBAA Members in the News

Members of Idaho Texas Longhorn Producers Association Featured in Capital Press Agricultural News

TLBAA Members Dusty and Melissa Weitz, Viola, ID, were recently featured on the Capital Press Agricultural News Web site in a story about their Texas Longhorn breeding program.

According to the article, the Weitz’s bought their first Texas Longhorn in June 2004 and now have twenty breeding cows and three bulls on their 140 acre Flying DW Ranch. The easy birth qualities of the Texas Longhorn have allowed the Weitz’s to loan their bulls out to Hereford and Angus breeders in Idaho for their first-calf heifers.

Also featured in the article is TLBAA Member and ITLPA Affilitate President Dean Goodner, Kuna, ID. Goodner, mentioned as the largest registered Texas Longhorn breeder in Idaho, has owned Longhorns for 11 years and said the easy birthing and breeding qualities are strong qualities of the Texas Longhorn. TLBAA Member Serves as Executive Director of Texas Coalition for Animal Protection

TLBAA memberStacey Taylor, Denton, TX, serves as Executive Director of the Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP), a nonprofit that she helped found in 2000.

The Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP) has just been awarded the Human Society of the United States prestigious “Innovations Award.” The Innovations Award searched for the nation’s most innovative approach to animal control and animal welfare. The award is accompanied by a $25,000 grant funded by Proctor and Gamble.

The TCAP opened a low cost pet sterilization and vaccination program in Denton, Texas in 2002. Since that time, TCAP has sterilized more than 26,000 animals and has provided more than 29,000 rabies vaccines.

TCAP was chosen as recipient of the Innovations Award for its progressive approach to low cost pet sterilization and vaccination for communities at large, regardless of income. TCAP also sponsors a Shelter Spay Program, a program where TCAP takes veterinary staff and supplies into fifteen different cities’ animal shelters and animal welfare organizations to provide low cost pet sterilization.

TCAP will use the Innovations Grant to provide approximately 750 pet sterilization surgeries for $10 each.

“We are honored by this highly prestigious award," said TCAP Executive Director Stacey Taylor. "Low cost spay and neuter is hard work, but means great results for Texas residents and their animals. We look forward to using this grant for great results in Denton and surrounding areas.”

Her mother, Carole Phillips, said that Emily celebrated her birthday with a pizza party and Longhorn cookies, while showing at the Prairie Expo and won first place in teen showmanship all three days. Below is a photo Carole emailed the E-Trails.

Drought Conditions Update

Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Trade and demand are moderate. Hay prices are holding steady on old crop, but not much movement is being seen. Some offers have been made on new crop, although the asking prices are high and not much is being traded. Over the week and weekend the Panhandle experienced some destructive weather with hail and tornadoes. Many areas also received some rain as well. Many alfalfa crops have seemed to recover nicely after the past couple of weekend freezes. Wheat fields are being laid down for hay. Chopped hay is at a standstill, with a few spot sales occurring. In the West cutting and baling is taking place, with reports on crops being better than they have in years. Some areas have received rain and windy conditions. The North, Central and Eastern areas have experienced rain as well, which has caused some delay in field work but has improved forage conditions. Many have made their first cutting and are waiting for dryer conditions to start baling. Ryegrass, clover and wheat are being cut. Reports have been made that the Coastal Bermuda prospects for crops is extremely good this year. Some are beginning to fertilize again, but those who are fertilizing again are using it in moderation as costs have increased. The South has received a good amount of rain as well, and those who have cut are waiting for fields to dry to start baling. Soil moisture has been rated as short to surplus. Wheat is poor to excellent. Rangeland and pasture conditions are mostly fair to good. Some supplemental feeding continues. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
