Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Prices steady with demand and trade moderate. New crop is slowly making an appearance into the market. Dairy quality Alfalfa and horse quality Coastal Bermuda hay is starting out close to old crop prices. Comments have been made that hay prices will continue to be high as long as corn and fuel prices stay high, or that prices will remain high until there is more new crop in the market. Some have reported that there might not be much until second cutting, as many are going to fill their own needs first since they ran out early last year. Others have commented that this first cutting might not be the best in quality due to the heavy rains that saturated the fields. Either the hay laid down was rained on, or cutting was put off because of the rain and now has weeds. Most areas have received rain in the past week, which has helped improve the conditions of many other crops being grown. Most areas have cutting and baling underway. Soil moisture in most places is ranged from short to surplus. Pasture and rangeland conditions have been rated as mostly good, and are improving due to the moisture received. Wheat has been rated as good and is maturing well, and will be harvested soon. There have been some reports of leaf rust. Corn has been reported as fair to excellent.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
