Deborah and TLBAA Board Member Larry Stewart, Lampasas, TX, with their herd sire Maximus ST.

On Friday, attendees enjoyed viewing sale cattle as well as catching a glimpse of a selection of herd sires from various sale consignors. Friday night was the scene of an excellent barbeque dinner and social hour where many Longhorn breeders enjoyed the cool Hill Country night and were treated to live country music performed by recording artist Todd Fritsch.

Recording Artist Todd Fritsch performed during the Friday night Pre-Sale Party.

On Saturday, a breeder’s symposium on cattle judging was held with featured speaker Lana Hightower, Van, TX. Lana Hightower has been raising and showing her Longhorns since 1993 and has judged many Longhorn cattle shows across the country. During the symposium, Lana gave specific details about the traits and qualities that compose good genetics in Longhorns. Many breeders attended and enjoyed the insight that Lana conveyed.

Lana Hightower, Van, TX, gave a seminar on judging cattle during the Breeders Symposium before the sale on Saturday June 2, 2007.

After the symposium, 225 attendees enjoyed a fried chicken lunch and eagerly awaited the sale to begin. At 1 pm the sale began and the 40 lots up for auction were paraded through the ring and 65 registered buyers began placing their bids. The sale auctioneer was TLBAA Sales Manager Jim Curry and comments were read by Sale Host Larry Stewart and TLBAA General Manager Larry Barker.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Prices remain steady to weak. Movement is still slow. Trade and demand are moderate. Demand for Dairy quality hay is good. Most areas have received rain ranging from traces to upwards of ten inches, especially in the North, East, Central and Southern areas. In these areas, some have also experienced flooding conditions. The rains have really hampered fieldwork and hay operations. Those who have been able to cut and bale have made comments of uneven yields and lower quality due to postponement of fertilizing and cutting which gave way for weeds to spring up. Most areas that have had dryer conditions are reporting of hay continuing to be laid down, baled and put up. Comments have been made that if weather conditions dry up in the next few weeks that second cutting will improve both on yields and quality. Wheat is rated as good to excellent condition. Corn is mostly planted and is looking good. Soil moisture has been reported at very short to surplus, with most areas fair to good. Pasture and rangeland conditions are fair to good. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
