Heart of Texas Longhorn Breeders Host Ranch Tour

by Kenn Harding, HOT President

A small but enthusiastic group of Longhorn breeders ignored the threatening skies and gathered at the Frank and Sue Bowdoin Ranch in Crawford, TX, on the morning of June 15 th. The weather cooperated with clearing skies and cool temperatures. After everyone had a chance to visit and meet some of the new breeders that attended, a lunch with Bar-B-Q prepared by Frank Bowdoin was enjoyed by all, during which many of Frank and Sue’s Longhorns paraded past on their way to their afternoon pasture. A short business meeting resulted in the election of two new directors to the HOT affiliates, which were Chuck Isbell of Waco and Gary Bowdoin of Crawford.  Re-elected officers are: Kenn Harding, President; Tammy Tiner, Vice-president; Barbara Homer, Secretary; and Carolyn Wilton, Treasurer.

A couple of the Bowdoin bulls, including a Wyoming Warpaint son, were up in the pens for viewing; then we drove around the corner to see Gary and Teresa Bowdoin’s 2-year-old heifers and his Hunts Commands Respect son. Driving a few miles to the other side of Crawford, we got to see Gary’s mature cows and their young calves, many out of breed-leading bulls resulting from Gary’s AI program. We then made the drive over Tonkawa Falls to China Spring to see cattle at David Stanley’s ranch. Young cows out of Ace’s Black Magic Man, as well as, young calves out of Coach and Vaquero Chex, elicited many questions from the visitors. A hearty thanks to the Bowdoins and the Stanleys for their hospitality and showing us the results of their breeding programs.

Alberta Texas Longhorn Association News

Most of us are well under way in calving season and looking forward to sending cattle to pasture after a long winter season.

March 18, 2007, the ATLA held their Annual General Membership meeting in Olds, Alberta. With a good attendance of members, several items were discussed and decided upon. Members will be looking forward to the ATLA’s 25 th Anniversary this year. All past and present members will be invited to attend the gathering that will be held sometime in late summer of this year. Other discussions involved showing, advertising, promotional items and a possible Texas Longhorn sale next spring. Thank you to all who attended.

It was unanimously voted that ATLA President Ron Walker be awarded the Robert Owen Memorial Award for 2006 for his dedication and hard work with the Association and Texas Longhorn cattle. This award is given to the person/business that best supports Texas Longhorn cattle in Alberta. Robert Owen was a strong supporter of the Texas Longhorn cattle and the Association before his passing a few years ago. To this day, Robert is still truly missed.

The directors for the ATLA for this year will be President Ron Walker; Vice-President Mark Johnson; Secretary/Treasurer Del Hepfner; Directors Lee Stringer and Mark Stewart.

Drought Conditions Update

Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Demand is moderate. Prices remain mostly steady, although some weaker prices have been noted. The market has been mostly quiet, with little movement in some areas. Most areas received rain earlier in the week, with most areas expecting more rain over the weekend and into next week. In the Northern, Central, Eastern and Southern areas that had received so much rainfall that it was preventing fieldwork, has for the most part dried up enough for cutting and baling to begin and/or continue. Some in Central areas have reported higher than expected yields. Corn has been rated as fair to excellent, and wheat is good to excellent with some reports of combining. Soil moisture is mostly adequate and rangeland and pasture conditions as mostly good. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
