Heifer Calf Donated to Blue Ridge Breeders Sale Proceeds to Benefit Operation First Response
TLBAA Board Member Lee Sherbeyn, Bealeton, VA, has announced that he has donated a heifer calf to be auctioned at the Blue Ridge Breeders Sale on September 15, 2007, in Mount Airy, NC. All proceeds from the auction of the heifer calf will benefit Operation First Resposnse.
“As long as we’ve got soldiers that are willing to stand with a gun between us and them,” Sherbeyn said, “so that we can live our lives the way we choose, such as going to sales and Longhorn events, we need to do what we can to take care of them.”
Operation First Response is a non-profit charity that assists wounded veterans and their families with personal and financial needs. OFR is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization, which sponsors fund-raising events that benefit wounded service men and women and is staffed by unpaid volunteers. More information about OFR can be found on their Web site.
The donated heifer calf, according to Sherbeyn, is a nice yearling heifer calf and will be 17-18 months old at the time of the Blue Ridge Breeders Sale on September 15, 2007. Phone bids will be accepted. For more information about the sale, contact Tyson Leonard at either (276) 238-1803 or (276) 238-8485.

New Mexico State Fair Two-Day Show Announced
Submitted by Kristi Wilson
The Texas Longhorn Breeders of New Mexico are holding a two-day show at the New Mexico State Fair on September 19-20, 2007 in Albuquerque, NM. Entry deadlines are August 10th.
The information for the Open Show for the New Mexico State Fair is now online at http://www.exponm.com/pdf/open//beef/texaslonghorn.pdf. This page has links to the beef livestock rules and general livestock rules.
The State Fair is not hosting the youth show. In order for the TLBNM to host a youth show at the State Fair, all the animals entered in the youth must be in the open shows to be covered by the State Fair insurance policy.
The youth forms are on the TLBNM Web site at www.tlbnm.com. Click on youth when the home page opens. You will need the entry form and the class form.
We will be sending out a mailing this week that contains the entry forms to the exhibitors that have shown in New Mexico in the past. If you have not shown at one of our shows and would like to be placed on this mailing list, please let us know.
If you have any questions or problems, please contact Kristi Wilson at 505-336-9940 or kwilson@zianet.com.

Alan was a longtime correspondent for the Trails magazine, and a dear friend to the Trails and TLBAA staff. A regular staple at all Longhorn events, Alan enjoyed photographing the Longhorn breed and the people who he considered friends, which was almost everyone he knew. He was also a former TLBAA director for many years and served as an officer for the Mountains and Plains Texas Longhorns Association – a TLBAA Affiliate. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Look for a special tribute to Alan in the August issue of the Trails. Drought Conditions Update
Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.
Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Trade and demand moderate with slow movement reported in most areas. Some areas in the West have reported drier conditions and have been able to put up better quality hay. Prices remain mostly steady. Grinding hay continues to soften, as more damaged hay appears in the market and is forced to be ground for feedlot use, but there are not many places for it to go. Reports have been made that feedlots are filled with hay and are getting ready to ship cattle. Coastal Bermuda and Dairy quality hay supply is tight. Most areas continue to get more and more rain, with some receiving above normal amounts. According to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's Daily Livestock Report, in the Texas/Oklahoma areas, the amount of acres that are considered to be in poor/very poor conditions is at 3.5 percent, compared to last year's drought conditions, when that number was at 61percent. Although the moisture conditions are good, some are nervous about getting hay made, with inventories running low and not many able to get into fields to get any cut and baled. Soil moisture is short to surplus. Pasture and rangeland conditions are good to excellent. Corn is in good condition. Some wheat producers are still not able to harvest due to the wet weather, although in some areas the wheat is so damaged that very little, if none, can be saved.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
