Alan was a longtime correspondent for the Trails magazine, and a dear friend to the Trails and TLBAA staff. A regular staple at all Longhorn events, Alan enjoyed photographing the Longhorn breed and the people who he considered friends, which was almost everyone he knew. He was also a former TLBAA director for many years and served as an officer for the Mountains and Plains Texas Longhorns Association – a TLBAA Affiliate. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Look for a special tribute to Alan in the August issue of the Trails. Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale III Mentioned in American Cowboy Magazine
In the July-August Issue of the American Cowboy Magazine, the Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale III was written about for the sales’ fundraising for cancer research. The article mentions that Sabrina 115 sold for $82,000 and that all of the money was donated to cancer research by consignor and TLBAA member Bill Hudson, Hattiesburg, Miss. The article also describes the event as record setting and includes information from TLBAA member and Sale organizer Joe Valentine, Marlin, Texas, about the purpose of this special sale.

Additionally the Penn State Cancer Institute has released the following press release about the event:
CATTLE AUCTION IN TEXAS BENEFITS PENN STATE CANCER INSTITUTE
Raises $82,000 for cancer research
HERSHEY- It isn’t often that you can put cattle auction and cancer research in the same sentence. But earlier this year in Grapevine, Texas, the Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale III did exactly that. The highest-priced animal, Sabrina, sold for $82,000, all of which benefits the Fenza Gaynor Family Endowment for Cancer Research at Penn State Cancer Institute. The endowment provides annual support to Penn State Cancer Institute physicians and researchers as they search for a cure.
This endowment helps Penn State Cancer Institute with its mission of advancing the care of cancer patients, said Thomas Loughran, M.D., director, Penn State Cancer Institute. The Fenza familys support allows us to make the latest cancer research advances available to our cancer patients as quickly as possible.
Sabrina was consigned by business entrepreneur Bill Hudson, Hattiesburg, Miss., and purchased by Bill and Judy Meridith of Wellington, Kan.
Robert E. Fenza, a 1980 Penn State graduate and executive vice president and chief operating officer of Liberty Property Trust in Malvern, Pa., and his wife, Marcy, established the Fenza Gaynor Family Endowment for Cancer Research at Penn State Cancer Institute in honor of his father, Matthew Fenza, who died from non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2006 and in honor of his father-in-law, Joseph Gaynor, and his sister, Debi Danino, both of whom currently are in remission. Rob and Marcy decided to use gifts from their wedding, as well as donations from his fathers memorial, to fund the endowment.
Fenza and Hudson became close friends after joining the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association in 2003. They share a passion for breeding and raising Longhorn cattle and, like many association members, have had family members and friends affected by cancer.
In November 2006, Fenzas wife Marcy was diagnosed with breast cancer. Within days of hearing the news, Hudson decided to donate his finest cow to support cancer research and to honor Marcy. We are humbled by his generosity and truly blessed by his friendship and support, Fenza said. And we can’t thank the Merediths enough for purchasing Sabrina to support the Fenza Gaynor Family Endowment for Cancer Research at Penn State Cancer Institute.
Penn State Cancer Institute is a unique partnership founded by Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, The Pennsylvania State University, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network, and Mount Nittany Medical Center. Along with its affiliate members (Lewistown Hospital, Wyoming Valley Health Care System and Susquehanna Health System), Penn State Cancer Institute is dedicated to advancing cancer research through the discovery of new approaches to prevention and treatment, improving care delivery, enhancing survivorship and quality of life for people living with cancer and educating health care professionals, patients and caregivers in our communities.

TLBT Member Exhibits Longhorn Steer at Parker County Fair
At the recent Parker County, TX, fair, TLBT member Broc Timm, Peaster, Texas, exhibited his favorite Longhorn steer, RT Diamond Bronco. Broc enjoyed the chance to expose Longhorns to the rest of the world and answered questions from fair attendees about the breed. The county fair did not have a Longhorn Show for Broc to show in, but after some negotiating by Broc and his mother the fair officials allowed him to exhibit Bronco. Good work, Broc, on representing the Breed!

Drought Conditions Update
Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.
Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Prices remain steady. Trade and demand are moderate. Better quality hay in short supply due to continued wet conditions hampering field work. Some areas in the North, Central, East and South have finally gotten some relief by experiencing drier conditions and have been able to get some hay laid down and put up. Pasture and rangeland is reported as good to excellent, soil moisture is rated as short to surplus. Depending on the areas, wheat ranges from poor to good condition, with some areas reporting loss in their crop.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
