Breeders Found Wealth of Knowledge at Longhorn Breeders Seminar

On July 21, 2007, at the Decatur Livestock Market, Decatur, TX, 53 breeders were welcomed to the Longhorn Breeders Seminar hosted by Paul and Mari-Kathryn Braswell, Forestburg, TX. Sponsors of the seminar were: Robert and Louann Rubel, Burleson, TX; Kerry and Nancee Mounce, Anna, TX; El Coyote Ranch, Kingsville, TX; Randy and Jamie Briscoe, Kingfisher, OK; Kent and Sandy Harrell, Tulsa, OK and Trigg, Traci and Tarah Moore, Hico, TX.

The featured speaker, TLBAA Board Member and Breed Advisory Chairman Dr. Bob Kropp, Perry, OK, discussed many important aspects of breeding Texas Longhorns including herd improvement, breeding techniques and marketing in the Trails magazine.

Dr. Kropp said. “I want you to envision what you want to do. Your breeding program will be geared to that goal.”

All of the breeders attending the seminar were given a folder with Dr. Kropp’s presentation, which included detailed information about proper breeding techniques and genetic selection for improving herd quality.

Dr. Kropp described Longhorn breeding like manufacturing a product. Part of manufacturing superior Longhorns involves breeders knowing what the market wants. “You better know what you want before you make it.” Dr. Kropp said. “I want you to envision what you want to do. Your breeding program will be geared to that goal.”

Dr. Kropp reminded all present that marketing requires advertising and recommended using the Trails magazine to become a “Mover and Shaker” in the Longhorn industry. He said, because breeders advertise they have built nationwide recognition for their breeding programs. He said, “One of your goals should be to produce an animal that a ‘Mover and Shaker’ would want to buy.”

TLBAA Events Coordinator Pam Dodson spoke to the group about proper registration and transfer techniques. She said that registration with the TLBAA is key to improving the value of a Longhorn and documents the progeny and ensures the purity of the breed.

Dr. Bob Kropp pointed out desirable traits that breeders should look for and try to include in their herds.

“One of your goals should be to produce an animal that a ‘Mover and Shaker’ would want to buy,” Dr. Kropp said.

Attendees enjoyed a deli-style lunch of sandwiches and fresh fruit and geared up for a live-cattle demonstration held outside in the pens. Dr. Kropp continued the seminar with a very enlightening demonstration about the anatomy of the Longhorn and traits to emphasize and look for while attempting to breed superior cattle.

TLBAA Member Susan Young, Cat Spring, TX, said, “I’ve learned so much. I’m really enjoying this.” During a break, Young stood up and thanked the Braswells, Dr. Kropp and the sponsors for organizing the seminar, which the crowd seconded her thanks with a round of applause.

Paul Braswell made tentative announcements for another seminar in early November 2007. Braswell then announced that the seminar had been so successful that it will be donating $250 to the TLBT for t-shirts and belt buckles. TLBT President Ashton Dunsworth, Shawnee, OK, thanked Braswell and the attendees for their support.

Drought Conditions Update

Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Price trends changed little from last week. Rain in many parts of the state continues to hamper cutting and baling operations. Low quality hay is in abundance as many producers have been forced to cut hay that has matured more than needed for bailing and been rained-on. Thus, higher quality hay is hard to find and is in demand. Producers trying to get more hay bailed this weekend but more rain is forecasted in many areas. Pasture and rangeland is reported as good to excellent, soil moisture is rated as short to surplus. Most other farmers of row crops in Texas have had similar problems with not being able to get into fields due to the wet conditions. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
