Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Hay prices remain steady with increased trade activity in the panhandle and central regions. Despite excellent grazing pasture conditions, demand is moderate to good as consumers are just beginning to purchase hay for their winter supply this month. Areas of central Texas are finally carrying out baling operations, but with difficulty since fields are still wet and hay is unusually tall. Some producers are up to six weeks behind their normal harvesting procedures. All areas experiencing shortages of high quality hay and this shortage is expected to continue through the winter, so demand is very good. The opposite is true for fair quality, grinding type hay available in abundance since rains have forced hay producers to harvest high yields of low quality hay. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
