Michael& Frances Hernandez Host New Mexico Field Day
Sunny days and cool nights provided a perfect setting for the New Mexico Texas Longhorn Breeders Field Day on August 18-19th. Over 60 members, guests and area ranchers attended the informative field day hosted by Michael and Frances Hernandez at their Santa Terecita Ranch north of Datil, NM.

A Breeders Clinic started right after lunch on Saturday. Former Trails editor Carolyn Hunter explained the many benefits of raising Texas Longhorns. She was followed by Dr. Fritz Moeller, TLBAA Director from Socorro, NM, who discussed breeding programs, setting goals, establishing a marketing program and the fun of raising Texas Longhorns. Wade Wilson, Alto, NM, explained to the group how to prepare for consignment sales, including selection, deadlines, catalogs and conditioning the animal themselves. NMTLB President Jim Johnson, Anthony, NM, discussed how well Longhorns and Longhorn crosses excel in the feedlot.

Next the group moved into the roping arena to evaluate the gathered Santa Terecita cattle where Dr. Moeller discussed what to look for in a producing Longhorn. As attendees walked among the gentle cattle, they were able to ask questions, comment on certain points, and generally increase their knowledge, both from a cattleman’s and a judge’s view.

Following a hay ride tour of the pastures, everyone settled in for a terrific chuckwagon dinner prepared by Jo Ann Remondini and her award-winning “Packing Mama’s Chuckwagon Crew” from Cliff, NM. They had worked all day preparing their dutch oven treats of brisket, biscuits, beans, green chili stew and a variety of cobblers, which were very much appreciated. After everyone had eaten their fill, they adjourned to the barn for a dance with music provided by a live band that knew all the country/western and New Mexican favorites. The highlight was when Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hernandez, Sr. celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary with a special dance to their favorite tune.
Saturday dawned clear and bright. After a chuckwagon breakfast, everyone gathered at the arena again for a discussion by Hunter on cattle photography. She explained how to prepare for a photograph, set up an animal, and other factors to provide the best photographs for print advertising, catalogs, and Web sites. Hunter displayed examples of both good and bad shots.
After the presentation the group boarded the hay wagon again, armed with their cameras and traveled to the main pasture. Local cowboys herded the group of penned cattle out of the pens, providing a unique photo opportunity for the photographers.
Later Suzanne Smith, granddaughter of the famous western photographer J.E. Smith, described his photos and the J.E. Smith Photography Museum and Gallery in Socorro, NM. Smith recorded the everyday happenings of the 1880s cowmen, which included the Magdalena shipping pens in 1885.
Before everyone prepared to depart, NMTLB President Jim Johnson presented plaques of appreciation to hosts Mike and Frances Hernandez, and speakers Carolyn Hunter and Suzanne Smith. Hunter presented prizes to Rebecca Moeller, Socorro, NM, and Carrie Sarnicky, Datil, NM, for Best Photograph, chosen from the ones that members had brought to the meeting.
Those who attended this educational opportunity traveled home with a new appreciation of Longhorn cattle and an extended knowledge that may help them in their own programs.

Longhorns Named Mascots of Cattle Baron Hotel
Two Champion Longhorn steers have been named the mascots of The Cattle Baron’s Quality Inn & Suites in Fort Worth, TX. The steers, Real Beef and El Cid, are owned by Gary and Kay Cole of Penrose, CO.

As mascots, the steers have traveled to several Choice Hotel Reservation Call Centers across the country including Minot, ND, Spokane, WA, and Grand Junction, CO. They will also appear at the September 20th grand opening of the Fort Worth Cattle Baron on I-30, and then will go to other call centers in Illinois and Florida.
The call centers host shows throughout the year so that hotel proprietors have a chance to tour the center and listen to calls coming to customer relations and group sales. Each hotel and chain tries to bring attention to its location, and the Cattle Baron felt the Texas Longhorn steers showcased the western theme of their hotel. Participants are invited to have their photo made with the steers. Over 600 were taken at the Minot show.
“We actually serve as ambassadors for the Cattle Baron’s Quality Inn, and it’s a lot of fun,” says Gary Cole. “The Cattle Baron is a great hotel, close to Will Rogers Coliseum, so I’m sure a lot of Texas Longhorn breeders will be staying there.”

Broc Timm is from Grand Junction, IA, and the fair he exhibited at was the Greene County Fair. We apologize for the error and thank Ron Nederhoff, Earlham, IA, for bringing this to our attention.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Price trends on hay generally steady this week. Weather the first part of the week was favorable for cutting and bailing and hay producers were in full swing. Thus, supply of baled hay has increased and more available. However, some areas late in the week in southern parts of the state have started to receive more rain and once again bailing in those areas has slowed. Pasture conditions remain excellent in most areas and supplemental feeding only minimal.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
