TLBAA Membership News
TLBAA Board Member Harvey Rasmussen from Houston, TX, is back at work and celebrating the 44th Anniversary of his design and manufacturing of the very first aluminum column in the United States.
Recently, Rasmussen was accepted into the St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital Cardiac Rehab Program at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX. The 12-week program features telemetry monitoring of the heart during physical therapy, which Rasmussen enjoys three times per week. "He got accepted one day and they asked him when he wanted to start and he said, 'Tomorrow'," Evelyn said in a phone interview.
Rasmussen’s aluminum columns have been popular as commercial porch columns since their debut into the marketplace on August 29, 1963. See more about Rasmussen’s business on its Web site www.columnsinc.com.
Now, back at work, Harvey is making plans to attend an upcoming building trades show in Las Vegas, NV.

Ben Steffler, the son of TLBAA members Jim and Barb Steffler, Lapeer, MI, is home recovering from a burn accident. The family is expecting a full recovery, and Ben should be on the mound pitching this upcoming baseball season. The family sends heart-felt thanks to everyone who has sent him their prayers.

A fire destroyed the 85x85 metal barn owned by TLBAA members Dr. Lee and Linda Ragains, Haskell, OK, this past week. Inside were all their tools and veterinarian supplies, three freezers, saddles, a skid steer loader, etc. Perhaps most of all, the greatest loss to the Ragains were the 70+ skulls of their favorite cows and bulls, which have they collected over the past 28 years. The Ragains were both away at the time, and none of their livestock were injured. The Ragains advise everyone to take photographs of their belongings before a tragedy like this occurs. It is very important to make a list for insurance and/or tax purposes, and items are unrecognizable after a fire.

Drought Conditions Update
Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.
Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Prices are still trending steady. Trade is slow and demand is moderate. Small square bales in the South are in good demand. Horse and dairy quality hay remains in short supply. An abundance of lower quality hay is still seen in the market. There is still a lot of hay to be made, if the rain would stop long enough for fields to dry up. Ample rainfall has produced a variety of weeds over the last several weeks, which has caused major concern over quality for hay producers. Soil moisture has been rated short to surplus. Pasture and rangeland has been rated fair to excellent, with the wettest conditions in the South and East. Corn conditions have been rated as good to excellent. Some areas in the West have begun to harvest corn and some reports of completed harvests in the South.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
