Show and Shine Private Treaty Sale Results

Courtesy of the Show and Shine Private Treaty Sale

At the Show and Shine Private Treaty Sale on September 1, 2007, in Fredrick, OK, many Longhorn breeders enjoyed the chance to strengthen their show strings via a special private treaty sale. Dr. Chad and Gretchen Hamel and Gates Fryer, Fredrick, OK, were the sale hosts and welcomed breeders to their Tradition Ranch for the sale.

The volume buyer was Lonesome Pines Ranch, Smithville, TX. Gray Ranch, Ardmore, OK, bought the high selling lots consisting of two cows. The Doug Irwin Family, Austin, AR, purchased the 2nd high selling lot.

Mrs. Vivian Kinder was a special guest at the sale. Attendees of the sale enjoyed a presentation about feeding their cattle the “Gain Plan” from a Cargill Feed Specialist and took home valuable information about properly feeding Longhorn cattle. Congratulations to the buyers at the Show and Shine Sale!

Texas Longhorn Cooperative Featured in Country World News

A group of TLBAA breeders, the Texas Longhorn Cooperative (TLC), was featured in an article published on October 4, 2007, on the Country World News Web site for their efforts to bring lean Longhorn beef to a nationwide marketplace. According to the article, the cooperative was formed by five families near Rice, TX, and is currently focusing its product – lean Longhorn beef – to health conscious consumers. Bon Appetit! Enjoy Your Meersburger!

By Carolyn Hunter

If the Meers Store and its famous Meersburger win any more awards, owners Joe and Margie Maranto are going to have to add a new addition to their already rambling restaurant.

The restaurant draws folks from all walks of life.

"...the beef has lower cholesterol than chicken, it gives the consumer a good feeling...."

Their half-pound hamburger is made of 97 percent lean Longhorn beef and served on a seven-inch bun on a tin plate has already been acclaimed, “Best Burger of Oklahoma” and featured on ABC’s Good Morning America television show and the Food Network. It’s been written about in numerous national magazines including Southern Living and Texas Longhorn Trails.

Hungry folks fill the dining room at the Meers Store and Restaurant for beverages served in quart jars and burgers served on tin pans.

"Their half-pound hamburger is made of 97 percent lean Longhorn beef and served on a seven-inch bun on a tin plate..."

Recently, the Meers Store and Restaurant was named as one of America’s top restaurants by Bon Appetit magazine in its September issue. The gourmet magazine also named the Meersburger as one of the top three finalists for Best American Burger in its list of “Best Places for American Eats…From Steaks to Pizza”. Not bad for the quaint rustic restaurant off the beaten path in the tiny town of Meers, Oklahoma (population 6)!

In addition, The Meers Store and Restaurant has been named one of Travelocity’s Local Secrets, Big Finds for 2007. Meers was voted one of the most authentic, truly local spots in North America.

And that’s not all. In the just published travel book 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before You Die, the Meers Store and Restaurant is a MUST-VISIT recommendation.

Meers Store owner Joe Maranto is a busy man.

"...acclaimed, “Best Burger of Oklahoma” and featured on ABC’s Good Morning America television show and the Food Network."

Maranto says the secret to the success of the famous Meersburger is his use of Longhorn beef that he raises himself. The cattle are grass fed and free of hormones, antibiotics, and insecticides. Since the beef has lower cholesterol than chicken, it gives the consumer a good feeling, and that’s important in this health-conscious age.

So if you’re hungry for a meal that looks delicious, tastes even better, and makes you feel good, head on to Meers Store and Restaurant for a Meersburger. Better hurry before all this publicity fills the place and you have to start making reservations! Oh yes, Joe Maranto advises that, “due to old age and a nagging wife,” he is forced to close the store and restaurant on Tuesdays and will be spending more time with his cows.

For more information on the Meers Store and Restaurant, contact Joe Maranto at (580) 429-8051 or www.meersstore.com. See the Texas Longhorn Trails (Sept. 2004) for the full story of this fascinating Longhorn business or visit www.travelocity.com/localsecrets.

Drought Conditions Update

Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Hay prices are generally steady this week under moderate demand. Trade activity and movement is light to moderate. Most producers are very busy cutting and baling this week, as rain is not a major hampering factor. An abundant amount of hay has been cut and baled especially Coastal Bermuda. A large percentage of this hay continues to be put-up in large squares. Most consumers are providing minimal supplemental feeding on pastures and rangelands and ranchers are not aggressively seeking hay supplies. Thus, several producers decided to store some of their supply and keep until winter in hopes of higher price levels at that time. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.
