Successful GNTLA Fall Round-Up
Submitted by TLBAA affiliate the Great Northern Texas Longhorn Association
When most people think of Wisconsin, they don’t think about Texas Longhorn cattle. On October 6, 2007, the Great Northern Texas Longhorn Association, a Wisconsin TLBAA Affiliate, held its second annual Texas Longhorn Fall Round-Up day. This event consisted of a day-long private treaty sale where the breeders with cattle for sale could gather in one spot and promote and sell their cattle. Along with the sales, people interested in Longhorns had a chance to visit with others who breed these great cattle.
This year’s event was held at TLBAA members Tom and Diane Mehlberg’s ranch, one mile west of Gresham, WI. Dan Huntington, from the 5D Longhorn Ranch, Gresham, WI, served as event coordinator. There were cattle from eight different breeders represented at the event. When the event was over, 22 of the 55 head of Longhorns had new owners and the GNTLA gained eight new members at this informative event. Huntington stated that this event wasn’t only good for their local group but five of the new owners of cattle purchased with us are becoming members of the TLBAA.
Mike Theil, Black Creek, MI, another active member of the GNTLA and TLBAA stated that he feels many of those that just came to see what this event was all about will be buying Longhorns in the future.
Plans are under way for another such event to be held next year in the heart of America’s dairy land.
Star Creek Ranch holds Mini Field Day for Snook Pre-K Classes
Submitted by Darlene Aldridge
On Wednesday, October 31, 2007, Star Creek Ranch, owned by TLBAA members Darlene Aldridge, DVM and John Parmley, hosted the Snook Pre-K Classes of 34 four year olds for their field trip. As each child got off the school bus, they got a Star Creek Ranch T-shirt and were officially made “Cowboys” and “Cowgirls” for the day.

The Snook Pre-K class visiting Star Creek Ranch, Somerville, TX. |
Events for the day included meeting FCF His Majesty, King of Star Creek Ranch, getting to pet a young heifer, meeting a month old calf that they got to pet and feeding carrots to the horses. As one class was treated to a Halloween surprise bag and snacks, the other class went on a hay ride to visit the cows in the pasture. The kids busied themselves climbing on tractors, trailers, rangers and a wagon that has been in John’s family for many years.
Many of these kids had never been “up close and personal” with any cow, let alone a 2000 pound. Texas Longhorn bull. Some were a little timid at first but after they got to pet the calves they got over their nervousness pretty quick. Everyone seemed to have a good time.
Terry and Regina Schubert, our ranch manager and his wife, along with teachers and parents who attended helped keep the kids corralled! This is slightly harder than working fifty weaning calves!
This is the fourth year in a row that we have hosted the Pre-K classes and I think we have already been asked to do it again next year. But that’s OK because we had fun too!

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Hay prices are steady to firm. Movement remains slow to moderate. Supply tight on Dairy quality hay, but cow-type hay is still readily available and sellers are trying to make some clean-up sales. Temperatures have been cooling down all over the state, and producers are hoping that this will push the price of hay upwards, especially since the lack of moisture has hurt the wheat growth and grazing quality so more supplemental feeding is needed. Comments have been made of different types of hay are now moving into the market as people are looking to have something as a backup to feed animals. With many areas experiencing recent drought conditions, pasture and rangeland conditions have been rated as poor to excellent with most being fair, and soil moisture is short to adequate. Wheat pasture conditions have been rated as very poor to good, with most being fair. The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas please click here.

| TLBAA Board of Director Vacancies in Division A and C |
| As per our association by-laws, Article IV, Section 6, vacancies on the Officers and Board of Directors of the Association shall be filled by the Board of Directors and such person or persons so chosen shall serve for the unexpired term of his predecessor and until a successor is elected and qualified. |
| The following vacancies are available: |
| Division A |
Division C |
At-Large Director
Region 2 Director
Region 4 Director |
At-Large Director
At-Large Director
Region 13 – Director
Region 14 – Director |
Any person who is a Lifetime member or an Active member of the Association and who is actively interested in and/or engaged in the management and handling of Texas Longhorn cattle shall be eligible to the Directorate of the TLBAA.
Since the by-laws do not provide for any special election possibilities, the only candidates that are open for election this fall by the membership will be Division B. The Board of Directors feels strongly that the region and division TLBAA members should nominate their own representatives to fill vacancies in Division A and C rather than simply appointing people to serve the Association in a Director capacity. Therefore, the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the TLBAA passed a motion to solicit nominations from TLBAA members residing in Divisions A and C to fill the current Board vacancies. The remaining term of office for Division A vacancies is two years and one year for Division C.
If you are a TLBAA Member, residing in Divisions A and C, and have an interest in serving on the TLBAA Board of Directors, the Board of Directors is soliciting nominations for persons willing to serve their regional membership and the TLBAA. To nominate yourself or any other person to fill a Board vacancy, submit a nomination by signifying the specific vacant Director seat and the name of the candidate by mail to the attention of TLBAA Chairman Dr. Fritz Moeller, P. O. Box 491, Stillwater, OK 74076. Submissions must be mailed by November 27, 2007.
In order to be considered to become a Board of Director, a candidate must be willing to serve, attend meetings, participate and be present at the General Membership Meeting on January 11, 2008. The standing Board of Directors will hold elections for each position vacancy from the nominated candidates that are in attendance at the Board of Directors Meeting prior to the General Membership Meeting. The candidates elected by ballot will be seated on the Board prior to the election of the 2008 Officers and will be introduced as new Board of Directors at the General Membership Meeting. |
