TSCRA delegate tours Europe to promote American beef

TSCRA Marketing Committee member Missy Bonds has begun a tour of Europe with a special delegation hosted by the U.S. Meat Export Federation to promote American beef. The group will speak to representatives of the industry about the age and source verification requirements of beef imports to the European Union.

Missy, of Bonds Ranch, Saginaw, TX, is one of two producers participating in the trip, which will include visits to the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Holland, and concluded on December 12, 2007, in Switzerland.

She arrived in London on December 2, 2007, and had a whirlwind tour of the city. Following is Missy's account of the group's beef promotion activities, which began the next day:

"On the third, the five of us (the team from USMEF and myself) visited a ranch that was about an hour outside of London. It was amazing to see this operation. All of the cows, some with the calves by their side, had to live inside a barn until April. Read more on the TSCRA Web site.

USDA announces beef promotion board appointments

Thirty-nine appointees to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board were announced December 6, 2007, by Acting Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner. All appointees will serve three-year terms beginning February 3, 2008.

Several of the new appointees are members of Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, including Brian C. Healey of Davis, Okla. and from Texas, Leroy Ezer, Anahuac; Austin E. Brown III, Beeville; and Mary Lou Bradley, Memphis. TSCRA member Richard J. Hodge from Pledger, Texas, was reappointed to the board.

The board oversees collection of $1-per-head on all cattle sold in the United States, and $1-per-head equivalent on imported cattle, beef and beef products. In addition, the board contracts with established national, non-profit, and industry-governed organizations to implement programs of promotion, research, consumer information, industry information, foreign marketing and producer communications.

The 104-member board is authorized by the Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985. The agriculture secretary selects the appointees nominated by beef, veal, dairy and importer certified organizations. USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service monitors operation of the board.
