Longhorns Exhibited in Fairs Around the United States

-East Texas State Fair - Tyler, TX - Oct. 2-3, 2004-

The show ring at the East Texas State Fair in Tyler, TX was so filled with Longhorn enthusiasts that they had to arrive early or be prepared to stand during the two days of Longhorn competitions.

"The stands were packed each day," said Show Chairwoman Lana Hightower. "The atmosphere was so pleasant. Everyone had smiles on their faces and were just enjoying themselves."

A performance from a group of Texas Longhorn riding steers kicked off the beginning of each day of Longhorn events, and Todd Williams of the W-5 Hereford Ranch in Arp, TX sang the national anthem. The Longhorn riding steers were coordinated by Janice Heinze and have been a part of the fair for years. Rachel Collins, Shannon Collins, Josh Niosi, Tanner Sistrunk, Janet Kostellic and Janice Heinze rode steers, as well as Martha Moorehart, who came all the way from Ohio.

The Autobahn Motorcar Group Youth Scholarship Tour Show competition kicked off Saturday with $6,000 given away to 27 of the 41 kids showing cattle. In each class $430 worth of scholarship money was up for grabs. The first place winners received $110, the second place winners received $100, third place winners garnered $90, fourth place winners took home $75 and fifth place winners received $55. Winners of scholarship money include K. Wyatt Harris, Jake Murphy, Kari Dennis, Tanner Sistrunk, Chris Moon, Laura Harding, Hannah Murphy, Tori Fairchild, Allie Galloway, Cody Hatley, Shannon Collins, Amanda Rooker, Luke Erwin, Laramy Estel, Michael Watters, Trevor Erickson, Justin Standridge, Kyle Tanner, Katie Willard, Aaron Estel, Samantha Johnson, Tarah Moore, Matthew Head, Ronney Gonzales, Josh Hall, Justin Patterson and Sam Galloway.

Greg Briney of Sanger, TX judged the youth show where Shannon Collins showed the Grand Champion Female, Miss Chievous. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was JTW Empress Camryn, exhibited by Jake Murphy. Allie Galloway showed the Grand Champion Bull, JTW Emperor's King, and Matthew Head exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Bull, RHL Blue Sky. The Grand Champion Steer was JTW Flaming Skunk, exhibited by Allie Galloway, and Jake Murphy exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Bull, JTW Hank.

Jake Whitfill of Ennis, TX judged the Youth Showmanship with 41 kids participating. The winners are as follows:

The 11 winners of the peewee showmanship included Shelby Rooker, Cayci Hatley, Madigan Davis, Ravin Petrick, Faith Windham, Katelin Bryant, Holly Niosi, Madison Ollive, Cason McCarrell, Bryce Kuhn and Dylan Fairchild.

Junior Division (Ages 7 to 9) First Place- Tarah Moore; Second Place- Garret Tanner; Third Place- Tori Fairchild

Intermediate Division (Ages 10 to 12) First Place- Luke Erwin; Second Place- Jake Murphy; Third Place- Matthew Head

Teen Division (Ages 13 to 15) First Place- Laramy Estel; Second Place- Samantha Johnson; Third Place- Stephanie Johnson

Senior Division (Ages 16 to 18) First Place- Kari Dennis; Second Place- Aaron Estel; Third Place- Jennelle Infantel

There were 64 participants in the haltered show, which was judged by Randy Algood of Bowie, TX on Friday morning. The non-haltered show began Friday night and was judged by Greg Briney.

In the Haltered Show, the title of Grand Champion Female was given to HD Edge's Emminence, owned by Chris Schaper of Purvis, MS. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was Headliner's Painted Lace, owned by Russell and Lani Fairchild. The Grand Champion Mature Female was CSA 4T Miss Tex, owned by Donnie Taylor. The Reserve Grand Champion Mature Female was Sunrise Shampoo, owned by Luke Erwin. The Grand Champion Bull was Sunrise Sonado, owned by Luke Erwin and the Reserve Grand Champion Bull was Topshelf, owned by the Mahaffey-Fairchild Partnership. The Grand Champion Trophy Steer was Super Czech, owned by Shannon Collins and the Reserve Grand Champion Trophy Steer was Ol' Sarge SH 13-0, owned by Kenn Harding.

In the Non-Haltered Show, Dr. Gene and Lana Hightower's G&L Crisp was named the Grand Champion Female and G&L True Perfection was named the Reserve Grand Champion Female. The Grand Champion Mature Female was Lib's Check Point, owned by Lavern Pfeiffer and the Reserve Grand Champion Mature Female was Whelming Critic, owned by Dr. Gene and Lana Hightower. The Herdsman Award was presented to Van and Julia Carter of 4 BAR C Ranch in Ennis, TX.

Winners of the youth show received belt buckles and all champions received engraved Texas Longhorn pewter platters.

Lana Hightower said she could not have been more pleased with the weekend.

"We were blessed with the people who came out. We even signed up owners of other breeds because of the impression the Longhorns gave," Hightower said. "It was a great pleasure to show off Longhorns and be ambassadors for them."


-Bluegrass/Heartland Texas Longhorn Show - Nortonville, KY- Oct. 2, 2004-

A cold morning turned into a wonderful day in Nortonville, KY for the Bluegrass/Heartland Texas Longhorn Show at Ronnie and Stella Cruce's ranch in Nortonville, KY on Oct. 2. The anticipated two-day show featuring the Bluegrass and Heartland Affiliates was coupled into a one-day show.

There were more than 80 entries by breeders from Alabama, Tennessee, Indiana and South Carolina. The judges were Ron Marquess, Darwin Rideout and Joe Graddy.

Ron and Barbara Marquess traveled from Ben Wheeler, Texas, picked up their four clones in Connecticut and had them on display at the Saturday sale.

"I liked that the two shows took place in one day," said Stella Cruce. "It was a good time. We broke for lunch with hamburgers, chili and Cajun beans. The whole day was great."

In the Bluegrass Open-Haltered Division, the title of Grand Champion Female was awarded to PL Something Special, owned by Pettijohn Longhorns of Gosport, IN, while the Reserve Grand Champion Female was given to Diamond C Cranberry, owned by Ronnie and Stella Cruce of Diamond C Ranch in Nortonville, KY. The Grand Champion Mature Female was Miss Cordilia, owned by Pettijohn Longhorns, and the Reserve Grand Champion Mature Female was Miss Sadie, also owned by Pettijohn Longhorns. The Grand Champion Bull was Diamond C Expedition, owned by Sonny and Angie's Longhorns of Olmstead, KY. The Reserve Grand Champion Bull was Marshall's Gunna, owned by Mike Tomey of Bedford, IN.

The Produce of Dam was Lucy's Bar Lady, owned by Beeson Land and Livestock of Nolensville, TN and the Get of Sire was Marshall, owned by Mike Tomey.

In the Bluegrass Non-Haltered Division, the Grand Champion Female was awarded to Diamond C Lycia, owned by Ronnie and Stella Cruce. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was Wire Grass Wendy owned by Joe Graddy of Cottonwood, AL. The Grand Champion Mature Female was Delta Shamrock, owned by Joe Graddy, and the title of Reserve Grand Champion Mature Female was given to Little Red Diamond, owned by Ricky and Jennifer Smelser of Catalba Hills Ranch in Florence, AL. The Grand Champion Steer was Bruce, owned by Rachel Gunn of Rector, AR.

In the Heartland Open-Haltered division, the title of Grand Champion Female was given to Something Special, owned by Pettijohn Longhorns. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was Diamond C Cranberry, owned by Ronnie and Stella Cruce. The Grand Champion Mature Female was Pettijohn Longhorn's Miss Sadie, and the Reserve Grand Champion Mature Female was Pettijohn Longhorn's Miss Cordilia. The Grand Champion Bull was JS Country Boy, owned by JS Longhorns of Magnolia, MS, and the Reserve Grand Champion Bull was Diamond C Expedition, owned by Sonny and Angie's Longhorns.

In the Heartland Non-Haltered division, the Grand Champion Female was Marshall's Little Angel, owned by Sonny and Angie's Longhorns. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was Overdrive Enchanteress, owned by Ricky and Jennifer Smelser. The Grand Champion Mature Female was Terossa's Sweet Girl, owned by Ross and Teresa Suber of Terossa Land & Cattle Co. in Portland, TN. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was JS Country Buzz, owned by Mark Mathis of Aiken, SC. The Grand Champion Steer was Bruce, owned by Rachel Gunn.

In the Heartland show, the Produce of Dam was Lucy's Bar Lady, owned by Beeson Land and Livestock of Nolensville, TN and the Get of Sire was Marshall, owned by Mike Tomey.

Seven children competed in the affiliation's youth shows. In the Bluegrass Youth Show, the Grand Champion Female was Zober's Legacy, owned by Mike Tomey of Bedford, IN, and the Reserve Grand Champion Female was Queen's Horizon, also owned by Mike Tomey. The Grand Champion Bull went to Booger 32, owned by Rachel Gunn of Rector, AR and Gunn's steer, Bruce, was named the Grand Champion Steer.

In the Heartland Youth Show, the title of Grand Champion Female was awarded to Zober's Legacy, owned by Mike Tomey. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was Circle S's Barb Wire and Roses, owned by Sonny and Angie's Longhorns. The Grand Champion Bull was Booger 32, and the Grand Champion Steer was Bruce, both owned by Rachel Gunn.

Stephanie Ray of the TLBAA said she hopes to increase the amount of youth participation in east.

"I want more kids in the east to participate in youth shows," Ray said. "This is a goal of mine."


- Tulsa State Fair - Tulsa, OK - Oct. 1, 2004 -

In Oklahoma, the excitement at the Tulsa State Fair spilled out of each Texas Longhorn competition.

In the youth show, the Senior Champion Female and the Grand Champion Youth Female was TW Plains Ranch Lady, owned by Stetson Edwards of Oklahoma City, OK. The Reserve Senior Female Champion and the Reserve Grand Champion Youth Female was AS Dynamite Gal, owned by Heather Fortson of Moore, OK. The Junior Champion Female was Tri W Morning Star, owned by Steve and Bodie Quary of Prague, OK. The Reserve Junior Champion Female was JL Blue Bayou, owned by Rolla Forcum of Moore, OK. The Grand Champion Bull was Diamond Q Hidalgo and the Reserve Grand Champion Bull was Diamond Q Bravo, both owned by Steve and Bodie Quary. The Grand Champion Steer was Mixers Tomahawk, owned by Rolla Forcum, and the Reserve Grand Champion Steer was S&L Sunday, owned by Heather Fortson.

The Showmanship winners are as follows:

Junior Division (Ages 7 to 9) First Place- Ross Hill; Second Place- Triston Wilson

Intermediate Division (Ages 10 to 12) First Place- Heather Fortson; Second Place- Corbin Coker; Third Place - Stetson Edwards

Teen Division (Ages 13 to 15) First Place- Kevin Mastin

Senior Division (Ages 16 to 18) First Place- Rolla Forcum

In the Open-Haltered Division, the Junior Champion Female was MK Judge Judye, and the Reserve Junior Champion Female was MK Letumriptatorchi, both owned by Bob Moore of Gainesville, TX. The Senior Champion was Martha's Mess, owned by Bob Moore, and the Reserve Senior Champion was TW Miss Gonna Be Curious of the Sunset Ridge Ranch in Cleveland, OK. The Grand Champion was Martha's Mess, and the Reserve Grand Champion was MK Judge Judye, both owned by Moore. The Grand Champion Mature Female was Tri W Legends Grabriela, owned by Steve and Bodie Quary, and the Reserve Grand Champion Mature Female was SSRR Legends Red Rocket, owned by Denise Everidge of Cleveland, OK. The Junior Champion and Grand Champion Bull was Diamond Q Bravo, owned by Steve and Bodie Quary, while the Reserve Junior Champion and the Reserve Grand Champion Bull was Tri W Hidalgo, also owned by Steve and Bodie Quary. The Grand Champion Steer was Pistol Pete, owned by Rolla Forcum, and the Reserve Grand Champion Steer was CA's Daniel Sparkey, owned by Richard Snyder of Midwest, OK.
