Sellin’ on Tulsa Time

With thunderstorms and rain dousing the consignors, the cowboys unloaded the Texas Longhorns donned their slickers and gritted their teeth as the rain peppered the Tulsa Stockyards. By the end of the day, almost all of the consigners had their cattle in by 6 pm. The cowboys had to trudge through mud and muck to hay the Longhorns after trying to wait for a break in the storm

As sale time crept closer, the parking lot filled with trucks and trailers with Longhorns “mooing” in their pens. With half the day burnt away, the sale started and the auctioneer Bill Sayre and sale commentator Larry Barker began to sell some cattle. The donation lots were auctioned off first and then the Longhorns were paraded through the ring.

The sale concluded around 5 pm, with Mike and Debbie Bowman, Benton, KS, as the highest buyers by purchasing $16,150 in Longhorns.

Steve Day, Dayton, TX, was the second highest volume buyer with $11,900 in purchases.

The highest selling lot for Tulsa was LTL Proper Pure Plata, sold by Kent and Sandy Harrell, Tulsa, OK, and bought by Michael Casey, Nicasio, CA, for $5,100.

The single lot average was $1,300 with 114 lots sold. Seven ropers sold for $2,670 total.

Jim and Jana Smith, new TLBAA members, from Blue Ridge, TX, bought their first Longhorns a couple of heifers that some of the buyers said were the prettiest in the sale. The Smiths bought their first heifer and couldn’t wait to get their first Longhorn home to Blue Ridge, TX.

Even with the rain pounding on the tin roof of the auction arena, the bidding was fast and exciting.

TLBAA’s Don L. King made a mistaken bid during the sale, which gave the audience a good chuckle.

As the lots were bought and sold the Longhorns found new homes and were quickly loaded by the cowboys in the pens and on their way to new homes.

The Marquess Arrow Ranch Sale

Was Right On Target!

After some much needed rain earlier in the week, the weather was spectacular and so was the hospitality provided by the entire Marquess clan this past weekend in Ben Wheeler, TX at the Marquess Arrow Ranch Sale.

The folks that arrived on Friday were treated to a first look at the cattle, great socializing with friends, bags of roasted in the shell peanuts to compliment the beverage of choice, and a full spread of sandwiches with all the fixins.

Saturday saw everybody in the Marquess family wearing their signature red shirts, as they scurried around to make all of their guests feel right at home. As the crowd began to arrive in the morning, all were praising another beautiful spring day and anticipating a great sale. Around lunchtime, Ron made the announcement that the restaurant they had ordered BBQ from had burned down on Friday and they didn’t know about it until Barbara heard it on the 10 o’clock evening news! Not missing a beat, they arranged for some delicious Italian fare to be delivered and it was enjoyed by all.

After lunch the gavel hit the block, Ron began calling and Craig Perez began commenting on the cattle being offered.

By the end of the day, Red McCombs Ranches of Texas had purchased Rutledge’s Justrite for $10,500 from Luke Rutledge, making it the high selling lot of the sale. Joe and Lorinda Valentine bought Style A Leigh for $10,000 from Rex Mosser. The High Volume buyers were Joe and Carolyn Wissel and purchased $35,900 worth of Longhorns to take back to their ranch.

It was a fun weekend made very special by the care that Ron and Barbara and all their children and grandchildren…maybe even some of the great-grandchildren provided to all of their guests.
