Toby Johnson Donates a Two Person Antelope Hunt to the World Show Auction
Have you always wanted to hunt with a world-class hunter and outfitter? Then get down to the World Show this June and if you’re the highest bidder, you will get your chance.
Toby Johnson, Big Horn Ranch, Big Horn, WY, has just announced he is donating an antelope hunt to the World Show Auction. Johnson has been all over the world hunting and might even teach you a few things about hunting if you win. But you can’t win unless you bid at the World Show.
Also up for bid at the World Show Auction is the February 2007 cover of the Trails Herd Sire Issue.
If a hunting trip isn't your flare, then remember the back cover of the new edition of the Texas Longhorn Cookbook and Campfire Tales will be up for bid. The book has been a hot item on the TLBAA online store, in national chain bookstores and the new edition is sure to fly off the shelves.
So make plans to be at the World Show in June and bid on these items.
Horse Slaughter Ban Passes House
This week the United States House of Representative has passed a ban on the slaughter of horses. Recently, it has come to the attention of your government officials that American horses are being slaughtered for consumption in foreign restaurants. This has been a problem in the ranching industry because sometimes horses are stolen from private herds and owners. Then the stolen horses are killed and sent overseas. Not only does this wreck the appetite but also what if it was your horse?

Warning About “Gas Pill”
For gas pains, don’t drop a pill in your tank.
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot has recently warned Texas residents about the use of “gas pills” in order to increase fuel mileage. Seeing that our members drive hundreds of miles to get to shows and sales, we thought it would be wise to spread the news.
The “gas pills” have been marketed online and on TV during the recent spike in gas prices. As per gallon costs of gasoline inch north of $3 a gallon, we would try anything to get more mileage out of our trucks and cars. Looks like popping a pill doesn’t work , even for gas mileage.
To try and get more miles out of your gallons, check out - http://www.fueleconomy.gov

New Landowners invited to Livestock Options Workshop
Small and new landowners are invited to attend the Livestock Options Workshop on June 14 in Southeast Austin.
The workshop will be 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Hornsby Bend Wastewater Facility, located on Farm-to-Market Road 973 North, Del Valle.
Speakers will address the topics of stocker cattle, fire ant treatment, and meat goat and sheep management. Sessions on fence building and agriculture tax exemption laws also will be presented.
“This workshop will benefit the small landowner and new landowner who want to know more about the type of livestock or wildlife that will best suit their enterprise, as well as learn about the agricultural tax exemptions to which they are entitled,” said Brad Pierce, Texas Cooperative Extension agent for agriculture in Travis County.
Three continuing education credits – one general and two integrated pest management – are available to attendees.
For more information, contact Pierce at (512) 854-9600.
Beef Cattle Short Course Will Be Aug. 7-9
COLLEGE STATION – The 52nd annual Texas A&M University Beef Cattle
Short Course will be held Aug. 7-9 at the campus' University Center and
Rudder Tower.
Drought and increasing expenses have made this a challenging year for cattle producers, said Dr. Jason Cleere, Texas Cooperative Extension beef cattle specialist and conference coordinator.
Fortunately, good beef cattle prices have helped offset the higher costs, Cleere said, but producers are wondering how long the higher prices will last.
One of this year's new sessions will focus on reducing winter-feeding costs. Industry experts also will discuss drought management strategies and rising energy costs during the general session.
The Cattleman's College will return with concurrent sessions on basic ranch management, nutrition, reproduction, genetics, pastures, carcass evaluation and record keeping. The animal handling programs will feature demonstrations on chute side calf working, cattle behavior, penning, sorting and selection.
Participants will be able to obtain a pesticide applicator's license or add continuing education units if already licensed.
More than 100 agricultural businesses or services will be featured in this year's trade show.
Registration is $120 per person and includes educational materials, a copy of the proceedings, trade show admittance, and tickets to the prime rib dinner and five additional meals.
Complete information and scheduling will be mailed to previous participants in June. Producers may register online at http://animalscience.tamu.edu or by contacting Cleere's office at (979) 845-6931.
