Perry Bass: Billionaire, Conservationist and Philanthropist

Our thoughts and prayers go out to TLBAA member, Lee Bass and his family, for the recent death of his father, Perry Bass.

Upon his death, at the age of 91 on June 1, 2006, the city of Fort Worth lost a true philanthropist who gave like no other to the city.

Bass, was a nationally known businessman and among the world’s wealthiest. With his passing, we, in the Longhorn industry and a nation, have lost a benefactor and friend.

Bass amassed his fortune through the oil industry, real estate, stocks and livestock holdings. His most noteworthy contribution to the Longhorn industry was as a leader in the revitalization of interest in Texas Longhorns. His son, Lee Bass, is the owner of El Coyote Ranch and has built a reputation of respect and integrity through his stewardship of the El Coyote brand.

The Bass name has provided numerous philanthropic contributions to the city of Fort Worth. One, being their drive to revitalize downtown by promoting the arts through donating and raising the dollars to build the “world renowned” Bass Performance Hall.

This rejuvenation to downtown brought life back to Cowtown and reminded people across the state and nation that Fort Worth is a leader not only in the roots of Western heritage but to the arts as well.

Hailed as a developer and a conservationist – in the same breath by Robert Cook in an article about Bass in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram – Bass strived to protect the land for future generations to enjoy.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy Lee Bass and his sons, Sid, Ed, Robert and Lee and grandchildren.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry along with numerous dignitaries, attended the funeral services to honor Bass on Saturday, June 3 held in Bass Hall..

Forever we shall never forget the ones who have done so much before us.

Our thoughts are with the Bass family for we have truly lost one of our own.

Open invitation to attend the 2006 Ranch Tour

Via Press Release from Heart of Texas Longhorn Association:

The Heart of Texas Longhorn Association invites all Texas Longhorn breeders to attend our 2006 Ranch Tour to be held on July 1, 2006. We will be touring three ranches in the Bryan/College Station area. A highlight of the tour will be the last stop to see the cattle at the Anderson ranch. Dr. Anderson has produced 10 cows that have reached 70” of horn and is the breeder of Coach. I have attached a flyer in pdf format describing the tour and giving a map to the first stop where we will have lunch. Please RSVP if you plan to attend so we can plan the meat for the lunch.

You may contact me to RSVP or for additional information by e-mail or by phone at 979-777-5256. We hope to see you there. Happy Longhorn Trails.

Member’s Son named Minor League’s Star of the Day.

TLBAA member Curtis Ohlendorf has got some bragging rights. His son, Ross Ohlendorf, was named Minor League’s Star of the Day for his performance on Tuesday May 16 th.

Ross plays for the Tennessee Smokies, a farm team for the major league baseball club, the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Ross won the accolades for his solid pitching. But Ohlendorf isn’t just a hurler, he can also knock pitches out of the park.

To read more about Ross click on: http://www.smokiesbaseball.com

And search for “Ohlendorf.”

Congratulations to the Ohlendorfs and we hope to see Ross throwing and hitting in the majors soon.
