Keeping the Longhorn Family In Touch

Showing Champion Longhorns

By Eddie Davis, Progress Editor -
It’s tough to be a consistent winner when showing cattle, but Cara Scott has managed to do it.
Not only has she succeeded, but she has done so with a special breed - Texas Longhorns.

Cara Scott brushes one of the Longhorns she shows in competition.

Scott, 17, a senior at George West High School, won second in the Texas Longhorn World Show with “American Cover Gal” - who is usually called “Girlie” – a heifer registered with the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America.
“She has won either first or second place everywhere I’ve shown her. She got first in Austin, first in San Antonio and third, second and third (in different classes) in Rockdale,” Scott said.
The animal is actually owned by Wilton Wilton of Copeland, Texas. Scott had the opportunity to show the animal through the efforts of the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America (TLBAA).
Preparing the animals for showing is difficult work.
“You have to get them halter broken and then feed them twice a day. About every six weeks you have to get their hooves trimmed. You also have to spray them off and make sure they have plenty of water. Before every show, you have to take them to the vet to get their health papers,” Scott said.
Scott said that contrary to popular belief, Longhorns are a gentle breed of cattle.
“When you halter break them, you have to let them know who is boss. They’ll try to get you with their horns, but if you hit them on the nose, they’ll know that they experience pain when they do that. They’re big babies.”
Scott said the environment is different in Longhorn shows than in other cattle shows.
“I’ve shown Limousines, Charolais and Shorthorns and it was real competitive. With the Longhorns, the people are like ‘What can I do to help you.’ There is nothing competitive about it,” Scott said.
Scott has secured a $400 scholarship as the result of one of her wins and is aiming for more scholarships prior to graduation. She wants to attend Texas A&M and study veterinary medicine.
Scott was named Youth Newcomer of the Year by the TLBAA and is also a member of Texas Longhorn Breeders of Tomorrow.
