TLBAA Member Makes News in the Land of Wine and Longhorns

TLBAA member Daniel Fey, Yamhill, OR, has come a long way from his birthplace in Switzerland to raising Longhorns on 54 acres on the Willa Kenzie Estate, a winery where Fey is a vineyard manager.

The article, published in the News-Register, describes how Fey worked his way to Oregon from Switzerland. About Longhorns he said, “They had a majestic look and a calm nature. I decided this was the animal I wanted to raise. I always liked cows, and we had nothing remotely resembling this breed back home.”

Introduced to Longhorns at a California State Fair, while serving an internship at the University of California at Davis, Fey moved to Oregon in 1998 and built his herd soon after. Read the full article on the News-Register Web site.

Longhorn Obituary - Roundup
1992-2008

Because of complications, from arthritis following the 2007 breeding season, it was decided to put the well known bull, Roundup, down. A semen check showed that he was still fertile after 15-1/2 years, but was unable to travel and service a cow.

Kirkham Cattle Co., located in Humansville, MO, purchased Roundup from Owen McGill and Johnnie Wilson of Wheatland, WY, over six years ago after trying for two years to lease, purchase or make a semen deal with Owen.

Roundup consistently produced his roan color with world-class horns. He sired the likes of Wyoming Warpaint and many other champion sons and daughters. Ken Kirkham said that he expected Roundup to accomplish what he did and it was no surprise to him at all. “I can hardly express what he’s done for us. He owes us no apologies, “ said Kirkham.

Even though he is gone, he will live on through his offspring and go down in Longhorn history as one of the great bulls of all time. Many breeders have his semen and a limited supply of semen is still available.

Big Horns Are Headed to San Antonio for Largest Longhorn Show in South Texas

The South Texas Longhorn Association (STLA) will present the annual Texas Longhorn Show as part of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at the Joe Freeman Coliseum Complex.

For many, Texas Longhorn cattle conjure up images of days gone by — but in today’s world, those beautiful Longhorns are turning heads and capturing the hearts of ranching enthusiasts throughout the United States. You’re invited to come see some of the best registered Texas Longhorns in the region and experience a little bit of Texas history.

“Kids and Horns,” the youth haltered show, will begin Saturday morning at the Cattle Show Barn, South Arena, and will be followed in the afternoon by the “Freedom Show,” an exhibition of non-haltered Longhorns, which brings out some of the longest-horned females around. The show finale will include grand trophy steers.

With over 140 entries, including previous award-winning bulls, heifers and steers representing breeding programs from across the State of Texas, the Longhorns will be on display at the cattle barn and in the pens behind the auction barn from Friday evening, February 1, through the weekend. Visitors can watch the show competition Saturday or spend time walking through the aisles in the main cattle barn (haltered cattle) and the pens behind the auction barn (non-haltered) to see the Longhorns up close.

A number of outstanding Longhorns will be present, including the seven-time World Grand Champion Trophy Steer, WOW KCC, owned by Kimble Cattle Company in Karnes City, who now sports over 109 inches of total horn (that’s right, over 9 feet of horn) and growing!

The STLA, an affiliate of the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America, has sponsored the annual Longhorn Show in San Antonio since the early 1980s. The STLA serves breeders and ranchers in the Central and South Texas areas by providing field day and ranch visit events and the sponsorship of various Texas Longhorn shows during the year.

For more information about the STLA Longhorn Show at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, visit www.stla.org or contact Steven Zunker, show chair, at 210-827-3940, or e-mail BoxZranch@msn.com.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Click here for information about the seasonal drought conditions and updated national drought information directly from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Here is an additional weekly drought monitor from NOAA.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Hay prices steady. Movement and trade activity fairly slow. Cold winter weather continues with some areas especially south and southeast Texas receiving moisture. Other areas remain very dry. There continues to be a large amount of Coastal Bermuda and other grass hays on hand in east, central and south Texas especially large rounds. Rangeland and pasture conditions are very poor to adequate with most at fair. The continuing dry conditions in many parts of the state has made for severe fire conditions. Supplemental feeding continues.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
