TLBAA Chairman and TLBAA Member Featured in New Mexico Stockman Article, Winkler Longhorn Painting Featured on Cover
TLBAA Chairman Dr. Fritz Moeller, Socorro, NM, was featured in an article published in the February New Mexico Stockman. The article highlights the genetic advantages and history of the Longhorn and how it is competitive alongside other breeds. Both Dr. Moeller and his wife, Rebecca, have been involved on the TLBAA for the past 20 years. Chairman Moeller is quoted in the article saying, “When you love a breed as much as we do, you promote it and participate in the activities. We are privileged to be allowed to help lead the organization.”
Also interviewed for the article was TLBAA Lifetime member Joe Knowles, Springer, NM. Knowles is quoted as saying, “I maintain that I’ve got the most efficient cattle in the country. One of my Longhorn cows can wean 60 percent of her body weight in 205 days.”
Artist Kathy Winkler’s painting “Peaceful, Easy Feeling” is featured on the February 2008 cover of the New Mexico Stockman. The painting is on display at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum in Las Cruces, NM. To see the cover and read the article (beginning on page 100) visit the New Mexico Stockman Web site.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Hay prices remain steady. Movement and trade activity has picked up a little in most areas, as sellers are trying to clean out their barns before new crop. Although, some have commented on how the high corn prices are keeping people from putting cattle on feed, therefore slowing down hay usage. Demand is moderate to good. Most areas are very dry with no sign of relief on the way, and even those who have received rain or snow are still lacking soil moisture because of windy conditions. Some areas are starting to have fires spark up, and others are in fire danger conditions and burn bans have been put into effect. Reports have been made that many buyers are reluctant to buy the higher priced hay right now, even though it has the quality that they might need. Instead they are settling for the lower quality hay, because there is such a big concern with price. Supplemental feeding continues. Soil moisture is rated as very short to adequate, with most reporting short. Rangeland and pasture conditions are very poor to adequate with most at fair. Wheat pastures continue to decline as moisture is low.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
