TLBAA Members Featured in Southern Living

TLBAA members Lee and Gay Gaddis, Austin, TX, were featured in the March 2008 issue of Southern Living magazine in a special section for Texas readers. The article titled “Two Hearts at Home”, highlights the Gaddises’ weekend escapes which include entertaining friends and the workers of their advertising agency, T3. According to the article, Gay Gaddis will often find inspiration at the ranch, “Sometimes, when you get away from things, office answers come to you.”

Detailed in the article is a bit of Lee’s family history, his great-great grandfather George Washington Maltsberger guided wagon trains from Tennessee to Texas in the 1880’s. His fiancée, Roxanna Allan, was a part of the group and at campsites Maltsberger would carve a heart in a tree. When she arrived at the campsite, Allan would then carve a second heart and connect the two with a bar. The Gaddis’s now use the symbol as their brand and prominently display it on the front gate to their ranch.

Also included in the article is Gay Gaddis’s recipe for Madrone Bark Potpourri. On the ranch they have 400-year-old Madrone trees that Gay will collect fallen bark to make this aromatic delight. The full article is available in the March 2008 Southern Living special section “No Place Like Texas”.

TLBAA Member’s Wind Turbines Don’t Affect His Cattle

TLBAA member Harlan Walker, Wall, SD, was recently featured in an article published on the Rapid City Journal Web site about his investment in wind turbines on his ranch.

Walker, a TLBAA member since 1984, has installed a wind turbine atop a 45-foot tower to help off-set and eventually eliminate his power costs. Southwest Windpower, the manufacturer of the wind turbine, estimates the turbine will pay for itself between five and 10 years. As for his horses and cattle, Walker said, “It doesn’t bother them at all.” Read the full story on the Rapid City Journal Web site.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Hay prices remain steady, although some comments have been made about decreasing prices in order to clean out inventory. Movement and trade activity moderate. Demand is moderate to good. Some areas over the past weekend received some moisture. Areas in the South received up to six inches of rain, and comments have been made of pastures greening up. The Panhandle and some Central and Western areas are still lacking moisture and more burn bans have been put into effect. More producers are beginning the field preparation stages of burning, watering and fertilizing pastures. Rangeland and pasture conditions have been rated as poor to good, mostly fair. Soil moisture has been rated as mostly short. Wheat continues to be of concern due to the lack of moisture and windy conditions drying out pastures.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
