TLBT Member Going to College On Show Ring Winnings

TLBT member Katie Willard, Bullard, TX, was featured in an article published on February 14, 2008, in the Tri County Leader newspaper. The article highlights that after many years of showing on the TLBAA show circuit she earned money to attend college.

According to the article, Willard began showing Longhorns at the age of 12 with the encouragement of TLBAA member Gary Cole, for whom Willard has shown many animals and won many blue ribbons. Willard said in the article, that she learned to show Longhorns by attending TLBAA member John T. Baker’s Sunrise Showmanship Camp in 2003 and from there she became a regular winner in the show ring.

Willard plans to attend Texas A&M University in College Station and plans to become a large animal veterinarian.

According to the article Willard said, “when Bevo gets sick, they don't call on someone in Austin for his care. He goes straight to Aggieland.”

Congratulations Katie and good luck at Texas A&M! Read more on the Tri County Leader Web site. Thanks to the Cole's for sharing this news with the Trails!

Elementary Student Finalist for "Best in Show" with Longhorn Art

Art teacher Natalie Ridley, daughter of TLBAA members Doug and Sandy Stotts, Midway, TX, found an enriching use for her parents’ Longhorns in an art project for her students and one, Justin Reyna, received recognition for his work.

Reyna’s oil pastel of the Stotts’ Spotted Bevo was chosen as a finalist, one of only 10 in the Humble Independent School District.

Students in grades one through five selected rodeo art to create from several Web sites. They spent several days outlining and then coloring their subject with oil pastels. They then painted over the picture with black India ink and immediately water washed it, allowing the ink to settle only in places where the oil pastel coverage wasn’t complete. This technique allows for an aged and rustic look. Congratulations to Justin and all of the finalists!

Thanks to the Stotts for sharing this news with the Trails!

International Photojournalist Visits Running Arrow Farm

Submitted by Trails Writer Carolyn Hunter

Mitch Kezar of Kezar Photo conducted a photo shoot on February 12, 2008. He was on assignment at Running Arrow Farm in Wellington, TX, from Living The Country Life magazine for a potential feature story about Texas Longhorn cattle. The bi-monthly magazine is a national publication that has regional feature stories throughout the year and mails to 200,000 rural homeowners . Bill and Sandy Martin were honored to have this international photojournalist visit, take numerous photos and conduct a lengthy interview.

“According to the hoped for feature article in Living The Country Life , the Editor told us that it would ‘probably’ be in print sometime over the next 12 months,” said Bill.  “They found our place via an internet search for Longhorn operations. We were totally surprised that we were selected for an interview and photo shoot. I suppose since we were a ‘small’ operation, ours had reader interest as a ‘small, hobby type’ weekend Longhorn operation,”

Kezar has done photo shoots and editorial write-ups on an international basis, including Africa and China. He was twice named for the Pulitzer Prize. Some of his magazine photo credits have included Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Money, Fortune, Time, Newsweek, Business Week, and Successful Farming. Corporate clients who have used his photography have included Realtree, 3-M, Yamaha, Honeywell, Cabelas, Pfizer, Springfield Armory, Rockwell International and others. To see some of his impressive photography, visit his Web site at www.kezarphoto.com
