Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Hay prices remain mostly steady, except for Chopped Alfalfa, which is steady to firm. Demand is moderate to good. Movement and trade activity moderate. Comments have been made about new crop prices being higher this year, and some producers may choose not to plant hay, or instead plant other crops such as corn. Some areas have been receiving traces to very heavy rains this last week, with some areas even flooding. These areas have greened up and it has helped improve soil moisture conditions. Other areas have not had the same luck and are still having extremely dry and windy conditions, and more counties are putting burn bans into effect. So far it is estimated that around 940,000 acres in Texas have already been burned by wildfires this year. Most producers are still a month or two out from first cutting. Some areas in West Texas have experienced some cold weather and freezing nights and are hoping it warms up and stays warm until first cutting. Producers are still applying fertilizers and herbicides, although the areas that have had wet conditions have halted field preparations.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
