Box Z Ranch Featured in Country World Special Beef Edition

TLBAA Board Member Steven Zunker and Louis Christa, Luling, TX, were featured in a Special Beef Edition of The Country World Newspaper on March 20, 2008. On the cover of the special edition was a picture of one of the Box Z Ranch Longhorns and on page 18 was the article about Box Z Ranch, in which, Zunker and Christa were interviewed about the appeal of Longhorns and lean beef.

According to the article, Zunker and Christa began raising Longhorns in October 2003 on the Box Z Ranch. They currently have 47 breeding mothers and three herd sires. Before they switched to Longhorns, they raised commercial crossbred cattle and now use some of their Longhorn genetics in their commercial herd.

One appeal that won Zunker and Christa over was the docile nature of the Longhorns. “The more that we began to study them and the more that we went to visit other people who raised Longhorns, we saw how docile and how gentle they are,” Zunker said in the article.

“I think they are just majestic and beautiful animals,” Zunker said. “That was the real catcher. I just think they are living pieces of art. The colors, the patterns, the horn shapes. Each one is different.” Thanks to Box Z Ranch, for being great ambassadors for the Longhorn breed!

This two-day event is held along with the historic Doans May Picnic and provides an opportunity for renewing and making new acquaintances among the “new time trail drivers” and further advancing the efforts of the Red River Valley Museum to maintain the history and traditions of the early pioneers who went up the Western Trail.

A Few Good Longhorns Needed

The 2008 World Brahman Congress will be held in Fort Worth this year, and the American Brahman Breeders Association has asked for our help! They are looking for 8-10 head of Texas Longhorn cattle to use during a presentation on the history of cattle in America. These cattle will proudly be displayed during a ceremony in the John Justin Arena at the Will Rogers Memorial Center on May 22, 2008. Other breeds will also be represented during the program. Your cattle will be viewed by cattle breeders from across the country and around the world!  A great opportunity to spotlight the original beef breed!  For additional information, please contact Allison Chipman (817) 625-6241 or allison@tlbaa.org.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Hay prices remain mostly steady. Dairy quality alfalfa supplies are becoming tighter and as a result, prices are trending higher. Demand is moderate for most types of hay, but good on dairy quality alfalfa. Trade activity and movement is slow to moderate. Feedlot usage is slowing down, with some finishing up on old contracts. Comments have been made of an abundance of Coastal Bermuda hay still in the fields that will carry over into new crop. Areas in the North, Central, East and some in the South have experienced more wet conditions, and are reporting soil moisture as adequate to surplus, with pastures and rangelands greening up. This has helped slow down supplemental feeding of cattle. However, in the Panhandle and out West, areas are still extremely dry and windy and many counties still have burn bans in effect. In these areas, soil moisture is very poor to poor with rangelands at very poor to fair. Wheat continues to be of a concern in these dry areas as well, with some having trouble with green bugs and spider mites. New crop is still two to four weeks away, leaving some time for producers to try to figure out where the prices are going to start.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
