Heritage Longhorn Show Exhibitors Shine at the 2008 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
On March 16, TLBGCA and TLBAA members traveled to the 2008 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for one of the largest Longhorn shows of the season at the Reliant Center. With some of the highest quality Texas Longhorns competing in the show ring, Youth Show Judge Jim Williams, Boling, TX, and Open Show Judge Dr. Bill Able, Miami, OK, had their work cut out for them. Many exhibitors enjoyed the chance to be a part of the TLBGCA’s Heritage Longhorn Show and their Longhorns were in top condition.

On display in the Breed Barn during the Houston Livestock show was NASA Longhorn Project Steer, Trident. This was an excellent opportunity for Livestock Show attendees to be exposed to the Texas Longhorn breed. In the Steer Alley, next to the TLBGCA booth, were many examples of Longhorn steers with their swooping horns and massive structures. Many visitors stopped to snap photos and marvel at them.

Fort Worth Herd Hits National TV
The Fort Worth Longhorn herd got some great exposure on national television this past weekend. MSNBC’s Weekend Today Show featured spring getaways across the United States on Saturday, April 5. Fort Worth, home of the TLBAA, was one of the chosen destinations and a segment showed the Fort Worth Herd taking its daily drive down the brick streets of the Stockyards.
That afternoon, the Herd was shown during the NASCAR Countdown on ESPN2, the prelude to the O’Reilly 300 from Texas Motor Speedway.

Stone Broke Owners Open Store, “With a Texas Twist”
By Carolyn Hunter
TLBAA members Larry and Barbara Shepherd, owners of Stone Broke Ranch, in Cameron, TX, like to stay busy. In addition to raising quality Texas Longhorns for many years, Barbara has maintained an online store www.withatexastwist.com for several years, and you’ve seen her booth at the World Show.

Barbara and Larry Shepherd in front of their store in Calvert, TX. |
“The store was Larry’s surprise gift to me,” says Barbara.
The Shepherds recently purchased an old building in downtown Calvert, a small town in Central Texas, and spent several months restoring, decorating and stocking it. Larry did most of the carpenter work and remodeling, while Barbara started in on giving the building a Texas flair. Texas flags and signs, along with Larry’s Texas A&M flag, catch the attention of travelers on Highway 6 heading to Bryan-College Station.
“The store was Larry’s surprise gift to me,” says Barbara. “I’m familiar with retail, but only online. It’s been fun to get this physical store ready, and I’m enjoying meeting all the townspeople and travelers who stop in.”

The store features many unique decorative items to give your home that Texas Twist. |
The Calvert store features several of the lines found on the Web site, plus a whole lot more. Inside you’ll find unique western furniture, lots of decorative items, lamps, tableware, children’s items, candles, and handmade soaps from a local craftsman. There’s even a huge Texas Flag that Barbara painted on one wall.
Although their store is open for business now, Larry and Barbara are planning a Grand Opening for the last weekend of April.
The Shepherds’ With a Texas Twist is part of the restoration of this small historic town’s Main Street. It joins several antique stores, a bakery, and hometown café. An ultra-gourmet chocolate company is expected to open soon as well as several other businesses and art studios.

Although their store is open for business now, Larry and Barbara are planning a Grand Opening for the last weekend of April. If you’re in the area, you’re invited to stop by for refreshments, a look-see at the historic building with some of the original fixtures and see some unique items for your home or as gifts.

By Cole Dowden
“I have the satisfaction of knowing that what I spent a lifetime doing is available to interested parties on a worldwide scale," Rogers said.
For over 36 years, Alan Rogers, Kansas City, MO, has been amassing a marvelous collection of Longhorn horns and horn furniture. He recently announced that his Longhorn horn collection has been sold to a private collector in Fort Worth, TX. The horn collection that Rogers spent over 36 years collecting, took 9 and ½ hours to load into the moving truck. He commented that the collection “had grown to such massive proportions” that he could no longer house it.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture
Compared to last week: Hay prices are holding steady. Trade activity and movement remains moderate. Demand is moderate. Dairy quality hay supplies continue to dwindle. Although, Coastal Bermuda hay remains plentiful with a lot of carry over into new crop. Some areas are still extremely dry, with no relief in sight. As for those areas who have received some rain, some are still doing well as far as moisture levels, while others have been experiencing warm weather and windy conditions, which is drying out the soil. First cutting is still one to four weeks off, depending on the area. Some producers continue to fertilize and spray. With the increasing costs of fuel and fertilizer, producers do not want to go out on a limb and quote any new crop prices yet, but rather are waiting to see how much fertilizing and baling costs are going to set them back. Supplemental feeding continues.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
