A TLBAA Horn Showcase Satellite Measuring Certification was held at 10 am on Saturday for TLBAA members interested in hosting satellite measuring. At the certification, TLBAA Board Member Donnie Taylor, who is also the measurement supervisor for the Showcase, showed all the correct way to take a horn measurement. Also on hand was the 2008 TLBAA Horn Showcase Chairman Brent Bolen, Lufkin, TX, who said, “The more the merrier, guys. The more we measure at the satellite measurings, the easier it will be at the Horn Showcase.”

Student Receives Accolades for Longhorn Crossed Cow in Canada

Submitted by TLBAA Board Member Deb Lesyk
Kelsy Hepfner and her crossbred 4-H heifer “Jangling Ice”.

This year Kelsy Hepfner, Leduc, Alberta, Canada, joined the Telford 4-H Multi Club. For her beef project, she chose a heifer out of a registered Texas Longhorn cow and sired by a registered Black Angus bull. In January, the 4-H club had their speech competition and Kelsy spoke about the “Value of a Texas Longhorn”. She did extremely well for her first time and even received a comment from a judge quoting, “I do not own Texas Longhorns but after listening to your speech, I would like to go out and buy some.” Well done, Kelsy!

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Prices remain mostly unchanged. Demand and movement are moderate. There are still some areas that remain very dry and windy, which has worsened drought conditions and fire danger. Other areas have received moisture ranging from traces to flooding conditions, while some have experienced hail. Comments have been made that pastures are greening up in areas that have gotten rain and hay crops are looking and growing well. First cutting is a couple days away for some and a month or more away for others. Fuel costs continue to drive some of the market and prices of hay. There has been much talk of new crop, but not many have quoted a set price. With the feedlots losing money and not going to get many more cattle in the future, hay usage has slowed down and doesn't look to be picking up any time soon. Soil moisture levels remain very short to adequate, with most areas at short. Pasture and rangeland conditions are poor to fair. Winter wheat has been reported in poor to fair condition. Some supplemental feeding continues.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
