TLBT Presidents Message

By Ashton Dunsworth, TLBT President

As my grandma always said, “April showers bring May flowers.” If where you live is anything like where I live, we all should have flowers up to our eyeballs.

The show season is coming to an end, which means the World Show is coming up soon! To all of those with TLBT fundraising points, you will all have the say in what we will be having after the banquet. Every one point you have will count as one vote. For instance, if you have 250 points and your friend has 350 points and you vote the same, you will have 600 votes for whatever you choose. This is part of your reward for helping raise money for the TLBT.

Also, on the note of fundraising, I want to send a very special thank you to Bob and LouAnn Rubel, Burleson, TX, for donating two printed pictures to auction off at the Glen Rose show and at the Stillwater show. Thank you so much for your generosity. Also, thank you to the buyers.

Well, to all of those I will see at the World Show, be safe in your travels and I’ll see you down the road.

TLBAA Artists to Have Gallery Show in Austin

By Carolyn Hunter

Hide and Horn is the theme of a new show opening at The Adams Ave. Gallery in Austin, TX, on May 9, 2008. The two-man show will feature bronzes by noted sculptor Bob Coffee of Austin, TX, and paintings by recognized artist Lonnie Shan of Thorndale, TX. Both talented men are members of the South Texas Longhorn Association and have raised Texas Longhorn cattle for a number of years, so they have a strong knowledge of the cattle and horses that will be featured in the exhibit.

An artists’ reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. on May 9 at the Adams Avenue Gallery, 5601 Adams Ave. (off Burnet Road) in Austin, TX. All Texas Longhorn breeders have a special invitation to attend. The show will run through June 20, so be sure to make plans to see the exhibit.

Bob Coffee is an architect, sculptor and owner of the Travis Peak Ranch, west of Austin. A student of western history, Coffee has been restoration architect at three frontier cavalry posts and architect at Big Bend National Park. Named a fellow of the AIA in 1995, Coffee has bred and raced horses in addition to raising Longhorn cattle. He was named TLBAA “Breeder of the Year” in 1999.

Bronze by Bob Coffee - Tough As Nails - an old Longhorn steer beholden to no one and 'tough as nails'.

Coffee’s works have shown in exhibits coast to coast and in Saltillo, Mexico. His works can be found in Texas and New Mexico. His three-quarter life-size bronze of a Texas lawman and horse is the centerpiece of the Texas Sheriff’s Memorial in Austin. In 2006, his bronze sculpture of Marjan, the Lion of Kabul, was set at the Zoo in Kabul, Afghanistan. His latest piece, a race horse, was created for the Aga Khan, a wealthy Muslim philanthropist. See more of Coffee’s works at www.bobcoffeesculpture.com.

Lonnie Shan is co-owner of 446 Ranch at Thorndale, TX. A native of Illinois, Shan has drawn and painted race horses for a number of years. He originally worked in advertising design, but began painting Longhorns after his move to Texas in the mid-1980s.

Watercolor by Lonnie Shan – Guinivere.

Shan became a full-time artist and his works hang in a number of private collections, including the Butler Museum in League City, TX. Shan was selected as “Artist of the Month” by American Artist in August, 2007. Working in watercolors, pastels and inks, Shan designed the Longhorn steer drawing now used by the TLBAA as their logo. “You never know what you’ll see when you’re out doing live shots. When we arrived at the Coliseum in San Angelo this morning to do live shots on the children from the YFZ Ranch, we spotted an unusual site. A man and woman were taking their Texas Longhorns out for a spin around the neighborhood.”

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Prices on most types of hay steady, Chopped Alfalfa steady to firm. Demand is good on Dairy and Horse type quality Alfalfa, which is in short supply. Demand light to moderate on Coastal Bermuda in areas where there is a surplus. In those areas, producers are fertilizing less and are trying for limited yields to help balance out their supply. There have been spotty showers in some areas, and promises of rain in others. Many areas remain in extreme drought conditions. Some comments have been made of places in the South being claimed as a disaster area because of fire damage. Very few prices of new crop are being quoted, even as some producers are starting to cut and bale first crop. Other producers are still anywhere from one to four weeks away from first cutting. Comments have been made of hay that has been cut or is still growing is looking good. Soil moisture levels are very short to adequate, with most areas at short. Pasture and rangeland conditions are poor to fair. Winter wheat has been reported in poor to fair condition. Some supplemental feeding continues.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
