TLBAA Member Elected to National Academy of Sciences

The National Academy of Sciences announced on April 29, the election of 72 new members and 18 foreign associates from 9 countries in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

Among this elite group was University of Texas Biology Professor and Scientist David Hillis, Austin, TX. Hillis has been a TLBAA lifetime member and Longhorn breeder since May 2000 and has written many papers on the genetic inheritance of the Longhorn breed, some of which are available on his Double Helix Ranch Web site.

Hillis currently studies the evolution of biotic diversity with interests in relationships among populations at the University of Texas in Austin. He received his Doctorate from the University of Kansas in 1985 and was named a fellow to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in 1999. In 2000, he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Hillis has published numerous papers in his field throughout his career. Visit his faculty Web page on the University of Texas at Austin Web site to read more about his work.

The election was held during the business session of the 145th annual meeting of the Academy. Those elected bring the total number of active members to 2,041.

The National Academy of Sciences is a private organization of scientists and engineers dedicated to the furtherance of science and its use for the general welfare. It was established in 1863 by a congressional act of incorporation signed by Abraham Lincoln that calls on the Academy to act as an official adviser to the federal government, upon request, in any matter of science or technology.

Additional information about the Academy and its members is available online at the NAS Web site.

TLBAA Members Collaborate on Children’s Book

Submitted by Carolyn Hunter

Many TLBT members have dreams of becoming a veterinarian when they grow up, but don’t have a true understanding about what it takes to achieve that goal. Now there’s a book that answers many of those questions. Dr. Chad Hamel, a veterinarian in northern Virginia, is the author of I Want to be a Veterinarian When I Grow Up, a book he describes as positive, but realistic. “I wanted children to know about the schooling required and the hard work, but I also wanted to give the message that through positive thinking, you can realize your dreams,” he says.

Chad’s mother-in-law, Ginger Kinder of Chattanooga, OK, illustrated the book, trying to keep the drawings simple, but interesting. “It has lots of pictures to keep the readers interested,” she says.

Chad’s wife, Gretchen Kinder Hamel, past TLBT President, coordinated the book and the illustrations. Ginger remembers the time Gretchen lost the illustrations for page three and asked her mother to do them again. Not an easy task.

It took less than a year for the book to come together. Designed for children ages 3-8, Chad says it is a cross between Dr. Seuss and James Herriott. I Want to be a Veterinarian When I Grow Up is self-published, but it is available at www.amazon.com, Pet Smart Stores, and on-line at Target. Proceeds go to the Gorilla Fund started by Diana Fossey.

The trio has four other books ready to go as soon as time allows, and proceeds will go either to an animal charity or a children’s charity.

Adults will enjoy this book as much as their children and what better gift for a young person who loves animals and might just want to be a veterinarian when they grow up.

Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Prices remain steady. Demand is good for Dairy type alfalfa. Demand is moderate for other types of hay, especially hay going into feedlots, since cattle numbers are going down and are not looking to fill supplies any time soon. Movement and trade activity is slow to moderate. Many areas remain extremely dry and windy. Wildfires remain a concern, and many still have burn bans in effect. Comments have been made about cold nights affecting hay growth, setting crops and first cutting back a couple of weeks. For some, first cutting production and yields are down almost a half compared to last year. Some producers are cutting and baling, while others are still two to four weeks away. Rangeland and pasture conditions are poor to fair. Soil moisture has been rated as very short to adequate, with most reporting short. Wheat is in very poor to fair condition, with some dryland wheat being plowed under, while irrigated wheat is doing well. Some supplemental feeding continues.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
