Weekly Hay Report from the Texas Department of Agriculture

Compared to last week: Hay prices remain steady on old crop. Demand and movement are moderate. Many new crop prices are still not established, with prices competing with the rising costs of fuel and fertilizer. For those who are still a couple weeks away from cutting, they are not sure where fuel prices are going to be at, therefore they're not wanting to price their hay too soon. Areas in Central and South Texas have been experiencing colder nights, which has delayed growth and first cutting will have to be pushed back. Some areas have received rain, which has helped alleviate the drought situations for the time being. Other areas remain dry and windy, and have experienced wildfires or have burn bans in effect. Some supplemental feeding continues.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
