Weather Continues to Plague Longhorn Breeders

Submitted By: Carolyn Hunter

Extreme weather conditions continue to wreak havoc across the country, and affect many farmers and ranchers including Longhorn breeders.

Recent tornados caused damage to vast areas of Kansas. Joe Moore said, there was some damage near his home in Bucklin, KS, but the majority of the destruction was the miles of fence destroyed. Cody Moore, who traveled to Kansas to help his parents, said there would be a stretch where there were no posts, no wire, no nothing, and then a quarter mile of good fence, then nothing.

A tornado also ripped through the middle of Kansas State University in Manhattan, passing within several hundred yards of the hospital where Justin Rombeck, Home, KS, works. It also came close to the University’s bull barn where several million dollars of bulls were housed. Luckily, there was no damage to the building or loss of animals.

Torrential rains and flooding has been devastating in Iowa, and all along the Mississippi River. Past TLBT President Molly O’Meara Clubb says, “We are safe and dry in Traer but it's total devastation everywhere you turn. The TV doesn't do it justice. It will be a long rebuilding process between the floods and the tornadoes that's for sure.”

Floods also damaged the Iowa State University campus at Ames, IA; where well known Longhorn judge Marshall Ruble and his family live.

This past week, high winds or tornados and rain pelted rural communities along Hwy. 287 in Texas, tearing down trees, buildings, and electrical poles through Quanah, Vernon, and Childress. Several of the area towns are still without electricity and some businesses have either closed or have limited service.

Weekly Texas Hay Report

Compared to last week: Hay prices steady to mostly firm. Alfalfa hay supply, especially in West Texas, is short and demand for it is good to very good, with many producers having no hay left and customers waiting for third cutting to take place. Demand for old crop grass hay in the Central and Southern areas has gone up due to the increase in price for new crop. However, many of these areas that have made new crop Coastal Bermuda are experiencing lower than normal yields and quality. Most areas are still very dry, with high temperatures and windy conditions persisting. There have been wildfires in these dry areas as well. Some spotty showers have occurred, and have provided some relief to those areas. The increasing costs of fuel and fertilizer are still of great concern. Supplemental feeding has increased, due to lack of moisture for grazing pastures. The drought conditions are also affecting other crops such as wheat, corn and cotton, hampering growth and production.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
