Chairman: Larry Smith

Co-Chairman: Ross Polk

Auctioneer: Joel K. Lemley

Commentator: Cliff Whitfill

Top Five Lots Averaged: $2,530

Submitted by: Bernard Hruzek & Carolyn Hunter

Approximately 200 buyers and their guests enjoyed a complimentary meal courtesy of the TLBGCA and were entertained by Harvey McFadden (an Elvis impersonator) on Friday evening before the heifer sale.

Saturday saw more buyers coming in to select from the quality cattle offered by consignors from California, Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas.

Before the sale, everyone had a chance to browse several trade booths, select from a great group of Longhorn items at the silent auction or stop in for a cool drink at the Longhorn Saloon manned by bartender Peggy Wilhite. As usual, hospitality was the theme for the Gulf Coast’s 15th Best of Texas sale.

Joyce Hruzek, Houston, TX; Glen Smith, Spring, TX; Darnell Muenchow, Floresville, TX, manned the TLBGCA hospitality booth.

Following a hamburger lunch in the air-conditioned auction barn, auctioneer Joel Lemley knocked his gavel and the sale began. Complimentary Blue Bell ice cream and chocolate brownies kept the bidders happy. Kudos to the Gulf Coast members for working hard to make this a fun event and a great sale.

Volume Buyers: William A. Suber, Conroe, TX; Frank Hevrdejs, Brenham, TX; Agee Spidle, Bellville, TX.

Dan Tisdale, Bowie, TX, visits with Agee Spidle, Bellville, TX.

Weekly Texas Hay Report

Hay prices steady to firm. Demand and trade activity moderate to good. Supply of lower quality alfalfa in the Panhandle and Western areas short. Most hay being made is dairy quality and has already sold or is being held for contracts. Some producers are considering planting other types of hay to alleviate the shortage of alfalfa. Recent moisture conditions have allowed an increase in quality and supply for coastal bermuda hay in the North, Central, Eastern and Southern areas, with some areas experiencing scattered showers, ranging from traces to up to six inches. Other areas are still in drought-like conditions with high temperatures and strong winds persisting. Continuing high production cost are leaving producers concerned about being able to breakeven with this year's crops. Soil moisture has been rated as very short to adequate, with most at fair. Rangeland and pasture conditions have been rated as very poor to excellent, with most at fair. Supplemental feeding continues.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
