Border Challenge at Westerner Days Texas Longhorn Show
Submitted by Deb Lesyk
For the 2008 Westerner Days Texas Longhorn Show in Red Deer, Alberta, there was a new incentive for TLBAA Texas Longhorn exhibitors.
It was called the "Border Challenge" and Deb Lesyk, TLBAA Region 1 Director offered an additional award to the winner of each class that had both US and Canadian entries. The idea was developed to encourage breeders on both sides of the border to promote their Texas Longhorns. The show committee was pleased to receive entries from Toby and Kris Johnson from Big Horn, WY, and they definitely helped make the Border Challenge a success. Thanks Toby, for driving all that distance.
Four classes qualified for the Challenge: heifer calf, mature female, bull calf, and senior steer. The heifer calf and bull calf classes were won by Canadian breeders, Mark and Tina Stewart of Ponoka, Alberta and the mature female and senior steer classes were won by Toby and Kris Johnson. At the conclusion of the show it was 2-2 tie for the first ever "Border Challenge" at Red Deer.
A big thank you to all the exhibitors who showed cattle in Red Deer and "hats off" to the show chairman, Mark Stewart for coordinating a successful event.

Triple R Ranch – Longhorn Anglers
For the past five years, the Gander Mountain Ludington Offshore Fishing Tournament has drawn a large number of amateur and pro fishermen to Ludington, MI on Lake Michigan. The 2008 tournament, held July 17-20, was no exception as entrants vied for $100,000 in cash and prizes. .
Among the anglers looking for their share of the loot were Dick and Peg Lowe, Triple R Ranch, Hornton, MI. Friday was Ladies Only Day, and Peg successfully reeled in the biggest fish on her boat. Her Chinook (King) Salmon weighed over 17 lbs. and earned her two-woman team the 22 nd spot out of 70 places. Congratulations, Peg!!
Dick also made a commendable showing. He reports his team came out the top 50 or 60 percent.
Last report, a good time was had by all, and the Lowes were preparing to dine on fresh caught salmon.

Weekly Texas Hay Report
Compared to last week: Hay prices steady to firm. Demand and trade activity moderate to good. In response to the increasing high cost of production, some producers are continuing to decrease amount of fertilizer used. The combination of limited rainfall and ongoing hot and dry conditions across the state and the decreased amount of fertilizer being applied is only increasing worries of availability of high quality hay.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
