Weekly Texas Hay Report
Compared to last week: Hay prices remain mostly steady, except for chopped alfalfa firm to $5 higher. Demand and movement for alfalfa good. Supply for alfalfa moderate, although there is some concern of a shortage later on due to increasing demand for hay from dairies and decreased amounts of land planted for alfalfa. Some producers are holding onto supply in hopes of higher prices as well, which has affected feedlot consumption and some are turning towards different types of hay to fill needs. Demand for Coastal Bermuda light and movement slow to moderate, with most areas having trouble selling hay. In the North, Central, East and South many producers still have an abundance of the 2007 crop and are struggling to get it sold. Very little new crop is being made in these areas due to extreme dry weather and little moisture. Some of these areas and areas in the Panhandle are forecasted to receive some rain this weekend. Due to the Panhandle's severe drought conditions, CRP land that is approved for emergency haying and grazing will be eligible for a 10 percent cut in rental payments instead of the standard 25 percent. Supplemental feeding continues.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
