TLBT Holding Stuffed Animal Drive
TLBT officers are asking that you bring more than just your show animals to the State Fair of Texas Show on Oct. 19, 2008.
They are holding their first Stuffed Animal Drive and will be collecting new stuffed animals during the course of the three-day show. TLBT officers and members will then deliver the animals to the Children’s Hospital in Dallas.
More drives will be held at shows through-out the year and donations will be delivered to a children’s hospital in the area.
“By delivering stuffed animals to patients, we hope to bring a few minutes to their day when they can forget their worries,” said Becca Vizza, TLBT President.
So, when loading up your trailer for the show, don’t forget to load up a couple of soft and cuddly animals, as well. For more information, contact Becca Vizza at cowgirlvizza@aol.com.

Longhorn Steers Bring History to Life
Two Texas Longhorns steers put on a display of Longhorn muscle and strength by assisting in a demonstration of old-time farming techniques at The Ukrainian Village, east of Edmonton, Alberta, CA. The steers, Rusty, owned by Ken and Charlotte Beler, and Tex, owned by Dan Marte, helped plow a field at the village, which is a historical site in Canada. Under the guidance of driver, Dave Laing, Rusty and Tex also participated in an event called “Haying in the 30s,” near St. Paul, Alberta. A job well done!

TLBAA Member Subject of Trivia Question on Game Show!
TLBAA member Red McCombs was the subject of a trivia question during an episode of “Cash Cab,” which airs on the Discovery Channel.
People enter the cab looking to take a normal ride only to discover they are on a game show. The driver asks the passengers general knowledge questions, and correct answers earn them money, while incorrect answers earn a strike. Three strikes means the passengers are kicked to the curb with no money and before they reach their original destination.
On a recent episode, a contestant was asked the name of the communications company co-founded by Red McCombs. Answer – Clear Channel Communications.

TLBT Member Spreads the Longhorn Word
Although TLBT member Kelly Donnelly, Pulaski, TN, didn’t have a lot of opportunities to show his Longhorns this year, he still does his part to promote the breed.
He likes to get out and show everyone how great Longhorns are. Recently, he created a 4-H display with the theme “Longhorn Beef is Best for Healthier Lifestyle” for the Giles County Fair. Kelly’s display won the second place award, and he got to talk to a lot of people about the benefits of Texas Longhorns.

Kelly Donnelly created this Longhorn display for a 4-H project. |
The skull he had on display belongs to the late three-year-old, BLL Goodtime Cowboy, who met an untimely death, due to what the vet thinks was eating wilted cherry tree leaves. Kelly’s next project is to educate cattlemen and horsemen on the importance of checking their pastures for trees and weeds that are harmful to their livestock.

Weekly Texas Hay Report
Compared to last week: Hay prices remain mostly steady. Demand and trade activity slow. Supply moderate. Many areas in Texas have received spotty showers ranging from traces to upwards of 11 inches. Those areas previously in drought conditions are experiencing some relief and greening up of pastures, although for some areas that had severe conditions, the rains did not come soon enough. Few areas out in the far West still have not received moisture. Comments have been made of producers still reluctant to sell supply, and for those who have been selling hay some have commented on possible shortages of both alfalfa and coastal bermuda. Producers are on third to fifth cutting.
Soil moisture has been rated as short to surplus, with most now at adequate. Pasture and rangeland conditions rated as mostly fair. Supplemental feeding continues.
The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
