11th Butler Breeders Select Heifer & Invitational Sale Results

August 29 –30, 2008
Lockhart, TX
Auctioneer: Col. Eddie Wood
Sale Commentary: Kaso Kety

The Lockhart Auction in Lockhart, TX was overflowing as people gathered for the 11th Butler Breeders Sale on August 29-30, 2008. The Select Heifer offering began Friday evening, once everyone had a chance to fill their dinner plates with everything ranging from cheese enchiladas, sausage, and fajitas to homemade cookies and cantaloupe pie.

When discussion among attendees would veer away from the outstanding Longhorns consigned to the sale, it found focus on the impending weather situation. With many breeders living along the coastlines, Hurricane Gustav stayed at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts throughout the weekend.

The Invitational Sale on Saturday, Sept. 30, brought more exceptional Butler Breeder hospitality as everyone was treated to another amazing meal prior to the sale. James and Tammey Hart, Baker, FL and John and Jane Thate, Fairmont, MN, were awarded plaques and Longhorn bronzes in appreciation of their work and dedication. Before the gavel dropped on the first lot, it was announced that this 11th Butler Breeders Sale would be Col. Eddie Wood’s final auction. When Col. Wood said SOLD for the final time, he was met with a standing ovation. He thanked the crowd and said, “The cattle made it all boys.”

NASA Project Cover Story of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Magazine

A Texas Longhorn is the cover model of the latest edition of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo magazine. The magazine, which is published quarterly, features a two-page feature on the NASA Longhorn Project, its roots, students, and bright future ahead.

The NASA Project was created in 1996 as collaboration between NASA’s Johnson Space Center and the Clear Creek Independent School District. The 53-acre site now provides hundreds of students a hands-on learning environment. TLBAA member Dorie Damuth, Flying D Ranch, was interviewed for the story, as well as Cindy Schnuriger, who oversees the daily operations of the Longhorn Project.

According to the article, the Longhorn Project is hoping to expand as a forum for kindergartners to high school seniors, with an emphasis on the agricultural, biological, earth, and aerospace sciences in a hands-on laboratory environment.

A special Thanks to TLBAA Director Ty Whering for sending a copy of the magazine to the TLBAA staff.

New “Texas Longhorn Museum” Opens

Lajitas Resort & Spa, located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park, announced the opening of the new “Texas Longhorn Museum” on Aug. 30, 2008.

The museum is now home to the historic “Yates Texas Longhorn Collection” built over 100 years by Fayette Yates, a third generation Longhorn Cattleman. This collection spans over 1,500 pieces and includes some of the largest Longhorns ever recorded. The western icon, known as the Texas Longhorn, originated in Spain and arrived in Mexico in 1521.

I.G. Yates began the family tradition by trailing three herds of Longhorn cattle up north in the 1800s. His son “Cap” Yates is credited with reviving the breed that was in danger of dying out. Many of the Yates Longhorns were purchased as seed stock for the Wichita Wildlife Refuge herd. Cap’s son Fayette continued the family tradition and built the “Texas Longhorn” horn collection. His wish was for the collection to remain intact and to serve as a teaching reminder of the “glory days” of the West. The collection owned and donated by a private collector is housed in the historic Lajitas Trading Post. The museum is open to the general public and is available free of charge for everyone visiting the Big Bend Region to enjoy.

TLBT Holding Stuffed Animal Drive

TLBT officers are asking that you bring more than just your show animals to the State Fair of Texas Show on Oct. 19, 2008.

They are holding their first Stuffed Animal Drive and will be collecting new stuffed animals during the course of the three-day show. TLBT officers and members will then deliver the animals to the Children’s Hospital in Dallas.

More drives will be held at shows through-out the year and donations will be delivered to a children’s hospital in the area.

“By delivering stuffed animals to patients, we hope to bring a few minutes to their day when they can forget their worries,” said Becca Vizza, TLBT President.

So, when loading up your trailer for the show, don’t forget to load up a couple of soft and cuddly animals, as well. For more information, contact Becca Vizza at cowgirlvizza@aol.com.

Weekly Texas Hay Report

Compared to last week: Hay prices remain mostly steady. Demand and trade activity slow. Supply moderate. Many areas in Texas have received spotty showers ranging from traces to upwards of 11 inches. Those areas previously in drought conditions are experiencing some relief and greening up of pastures, although for some areas that had severe conditions, the rains did not come soon enough. Few areas out in the far West still have not received moisture. Comments have been made of producers still reluctant to sell supply, and for those who have been selling hay some have commented on possible shortages of both alfalfa and coastal bermuda. Producers are on third to fifth cutting.

Soil moisture has been rated as short to surplus, with most now at adequate. Pasture and rangeland conditions rated as mostly fair. Supplemental feeding continues.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
